I’m sure by now you have heard that the Supreme Court of the United States ruled gay marriage legal across the nation. (If you didn’t know that, are you living under a rock? Like seriously.) As you have probably already realized, this decision is a big deal. While some states are refusing to comply until they actually receive a mandate from the federal courts, it will not be long until all couples will be free to wed in whichever state they wish.
Gays, lesbians, and bisexuals across the nation are celebrating this historic landmark, but it isn’t just them. It’s everybody. Gay or straight, the country is embracing the new freedom given to the gay community. But why should you care? Let me tell you a little secret: You don’t have to be gay in order to be excited about this ruling. Because chances are, you know someone who will be directly impacted by the court’s decision. You may not even realize it, but I promise you do. Maybe it is a family member, whom has been dreaming of one day marrying their longtime partner. Or maybe a friend, finally getting to have the Pinterest wedding of their dreams. Or maybe it is just the guy at the checkout at your local grocery store, finally having the courage to come out to the world. So many people grow up dreaming of their wedding day, and now it is possible for people of all orientations and that is beautiful.
If you are still not convinced that you should be excited about the Supreme Court’s ruling, just remember one thing; love. Isn’t that what marriage is all about? Celebrating the love one person has for another? If this court decision means anything, it means more love. More love for everyone. Now how can you not be excited about that?
