Why Recruitment Practices are Actually the Best

Why Recruitment Practices are Actually the Best

It’s recruitment season.

For fraternities, that means parties, meeting guys and basically doing what they always do. For sororities, however, it’s a completely different story.

Every sorority chapter at Ole Miss has just finished their week-long marathon of recruitment practices, but the preparation for recruitment is far from over. After a long day of classes, sorority women will be hard at work practicing songs, smiles, and—most importantly—meeting new girls. It’s exhausting, it takes up nights we would rather be sleeping or Netflix-ing, but it’s totally worth it. Here’s just a few reasons why everyone should love recruitment practice:

1. It’s a workout. Spring Break 2015, am I right ladies? Between the hair-slinging, running outside to call names, and door stacks—all in sizzling Mississippi heat—sweat will be dripping and muscles aching. Take this as an excuse not to go to the gym during the week (I know I will) and get Grove ready.

2. Hang out with hundreds of your sisters all the time. After a summer apart, packing everyone into one room is like heaven. You get to admire everyone’s tans, compare summer vacation memories, and plan for every weekend here to winter break. Prepare for lots of squealing, jump-hugging, and reunion Instas. Just embrace it, everyone does it.

3. Meeting new people in your chapter. With 100+ girls in every pledge class, it’s impossible to know everyone's name or where they’re from. But recruitment practice is the perfect opportunity to sit next to new girls, get to know everyone a little better, and bond as a chapter. After all, showing how close you are as sisters will make your house so much more special for the PNMs coming through.

4. Brag about all the cute PNMs you met this weekend. She’s perfect. She’s adorable. She’s from your home town. She’s your future little. No matter what it is, take recruitment practice as a chance to brag about how awesome this PNM is and get your sisters to love her, too.

5. Lots and lots of free t-shirts. You might have 50+ shirts already, but what’s seven or eight more? After all, once Bid Day is over, it’s all about prepping for new littles! You want to wear your letters everyday anyways, so stock up on as many free things as you can. Recruitment Chairs are as generous as they are enthusiastic, take advantage of it.

6. Show chapter pride. Isn’t it an awesome feeling to be the loudest doorstack on the row? Or see people on YikYak complain that your house is being too loud? So what if people can year you all the way to the library, you are screaming your lungs out for a reason: YOU LOVE YOUR SORORITY. Take pride wearing your letters every day and show why every girl should want to be at your house on Bid Day.

To all the sorority women out there: good luck and have fun with recruitment practices! Only a few more weeks until Bid Day. To the PNMs: get excited for recruitment, because every chapter has been putting in so much effort to make recruitment perfect for every one of you. Happy Recruitment Season to all!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
