Nicole Arbour is a comedian and a YouTube sensation. She is known for her "funny" videos and her strong opinions. Arbour does not care about what she says, and clearly, she doesn't care whether she's offending people. Her video "Dear Fat People" has gotten over 600,000 views. YouTube has decided to suspend her youtube account, due to the impact that her video has made on viewers.
You can watch the video here:
Fat-shaming is shaming people for their weight or physical appearance. Arbour claims that fat-shaming is a fake term that "fat people made up themselves." She wrongfully describes fat-shaming, and then continues to fat-shame throughout the six-minute video. Arbour claims that there's a race card, a gay card, and a disability card -- but there is no "fat card." She believes that fat-shaming is good because it helps "fat people to be motivated to lose weight." "If we offend you so much that you lose weight, I'm okay with that," she continues. This video is extremely offensive, and it's one of the most awful things I have ever viewed. Nicole goes too far with this video, and claims that there are no fat diseases and that people are just using fat shaming as an excuse. She gives an example of being in an airplane seat and being asked to move due to a disabled passenger. She then goes on to say that the passenger who was given her seat was actually with a fat family, and that a "fat boy's fat is actually in her lap." I could go on and list the numerous offensive things that she says.
Arbour may claim that YouTube has taken away her right of free speech—which may be true, but it does not make this video okay or appropriate. Some people can be very insecure about their weight, and there are thousands of people who struggle with their body. We should not be tearing anyone's confidence down, we should be building it up. Arbour, with her strong opinions, is a terrible person for posting such a thing.
