Why We Need To Start Saying "Yes"

We can't accept mediocrity.

Why We Need To Start Saying "Yes"

Our generation has grown up in a world where the word "no" has become an expected response to questions and requests. We've come to terms with the fact that certain experiences are not meant for us to have and that everyone is most likely going to get shot down by someone "smarter" and more "experienced" than them. Our generation has gotten used to the word "no."

We have forgotten how to say "yes." We've forgotten the beauty of spontaneity. For some strange reason, we stopped taking risks. We have all grown up too quickly and lost the passion that drove our generation wild. We have all gotten used to silencing ideas and missing out on experiences that were not worthyenough.

Society has told us that we can't have everything we want — but why can't we? Why have we become complacent with mediocrity and the lack of adventure in our lives? We need to start saying "yes" to the opportunities that are blown our way. Collectively, we need to understand that our generation is the future. We are the boldest and the brightest. We will do amazing things and change thousands of lives. We will create the future by learning from the past. By saying "yes" we will learn to live with purpose and open every door that has been boarded shut.

Say "yes" to every opportunity that presents itself to you. Live in every moment and seize every day. Never get comfortable with doors slamming in your face. Never become accustomed to dead-ends and "I told you so's." You can only learn from the experiences you have and the memories you make.

Our generation hates simplicity. We love to make things complicated for ourselves. We hate the fact that success lies within a three letter word: "yes." We make excuses and build walls around ourselves while burning bridges in the wake of our stubbornness. We need to leap from those bridges we burn and know that we will land on our own two feet.

It is time to say "yes," to jumping out of our comfort zone and breaking down the walls you built. Agree to take advantage of every opportunity that comes our way because our big break is coming. It is hiding somewhere behind the doors that have been closed long before we were given the chance to open them.

We have to pick every lock and try every key. We can not deprive ourselves from opportunities that have yet to happen because we were too afraid or too lazy. We will go nowhere in life if we accept defeat. Say "yes" to new opportunities. Say "yes" to a brighter future and a life filled with no regrets.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
