For those of you that are not aware of the exquisiteness that is "My Favorite Murder," let me give you a little background. "My Favorite Murder" is a podcast produced by Feral Audio and hosted by comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Karen and Georgia are lifelong fans of true crime that come together once a week to share their favorite murder stories in the most comical way anyone could imagine. Some of you may think, "What? How can a murder story be funny?" Karen and Georgia consistently riff off one another until you can almost feel the tears from laughter rolling down their faces. As if that wasn't enough, Karen and Georgia have brought to light a community many never knew existed.
In all honesty, I started listening to "My Favorite Murder" a little "late." "My Favorite Murder" started in January of 2016; however, I didn't begin listening until the following November (a great binging experience). Nevertheless, I have become a part of a community that I never knew existed. Karen and Georgia have coined the phrase murderino to help describe this identity many were uncertain of, but have felt for a long time.
A murderino is someone that is obsessed with the nature and details of true crime. Murderinos are the people that will wonder if that person on the side of the road really does have car trouble or is just making it up to abduct others. Many murderinos found their obsession to be odd, and were worried what others may think if they found out about it. But, Karen and Georgia make it possible to feel completely confident as a true crime obsessor.
Other phrases by Karen and Georgia include: "Sweet Baby Angel"; "Triflers Need Not Apply"; "You're In A Cult. Call Your Dad."; "Get A Job. Buy Your Own Shit. Stay Out Of The Forest."; "Toxic Masculinity Ruins The Party Again"; and the ever so famous "Stay Sexy. Don't Get Murdered."
All of the above terms relate to an episode of "My Favorite Murder" and mean the world to those that listen. So, if you have ever seen these phrases on a hat or shirt in your local grocery store, I hope it now makes sense.
While Karen and Georgia mainly discuss the murders and don't always recount them with complete details, or for that matter accuracy, they make up for it with "corrections corner" and laughter until I swear you feel your side splitting. Karen and Georgia are very engaged on social media. They will read your emails, tweets and Instagram comments. They make a point to show they are aware of their errors and what their fans want. They might not always agree with their fans, but they will at least point it out.
In terms of reading your emails, Karen and Georgia have an "intern" named Steven Ray Morris. Steven is everything you want in a "backstage" kind of guy. He is always there to help Karen and Georgia whether it be editing a joke that went a little too long, reading through hometown-murder emails or cat-sitting while the ladies go on tour. In each mini-sode, a roughly 30-minute podcast released on Mondays, Steven will hand pick the best hometown murder stories for Karen and Georgia to read. Hometown murder stories come from the fans of "My Favorite Murder," and fall under the umbrella of any type of interesting crime that happened in your hometown.
