Ever since I was little, Halloween was the holiday that we celebrated the most wholeheartedly. Of course, Christmas was always a big get together with family and waking up early, but Halloween was the giant party, no holds barred, holiday.
I remember always being dressed up. There was never a question of if, I just was. I still dress up now and absolutely love putting together a costume. Throughout the year I will see something, and a costume idea pops into my head that I build off of. This is probably why I have a closet full of them!
I love helping my brother and sister with their costumes. I'm delighted when friends ask too. Halloween is a time where you can be anything and anyone you want to be. You can put yourself into Wednesday Addams' shoes and walk around without a smile or pick up a basket and skip down the sidewalk as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. I personally think this is the best part of Halloween. Creativity is endless and you are able to see how things change from year to year.
Candy is always a plus, but it isn't necessary to have a great holiday. One of my favorite treats is my aunt's cupcakes. She would make them into designs like a spider or a couple of headstones. The fun part? She never kept it small, there were always upwards of 150 cupcakes and they were all different flavors. There was also a bunch of food that everyone brought to share. No one ever left hungry; in fact, everyone left super full and with containers of leftovers.
Trick or Treating is a really fun tradition. Granted, it's super weird because we were always told not to take candy from strangers, but here we are walking around the neighborhood. It's really fun to be able to see everyone else's costumes though. I love walking the kids in my family around the neighborhood because they have such a blast.
Halloween is my favorite holiday not just because you get lots of candy, not even because you can dress up. It's my favorite because I only have amazing and fond memories of it. I love meeting up with family and having a great time. This isn't knocking Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Easter by any means, but it beats it out in my book (I think Christmas takes the second place because of a bad Santa scare one year, but who would've guessed that every single kid would cry upon the entrance of Santa?)
