Music, as defined by dictionary.com, is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant form through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony and color. It has been said that music can have both healing and therapeutic effects, and I believe that to be 100 percent true. For a good portion of my life, music has always been very prominent and I have my parents to thank for that.
From a very young age, my parents always wanted my siblings and I to try new things. I've been on swim teams, gymnastic and dance teams (oh and cheerleading, but that didn't go over so well); you name and I've probably done it, but music is the only thing that has seemed to stick with me. I've played many instruments, includeing piano, violin, guitar and clarinet, and was a part of my grade school and high school chorus -- oh, and not to mention the handbell choir.
Music is imperative to my life. Have you ever had a hard and or stressful day? Well, I tend to have those pretty frequently, and music for me is a way to de-stress, a way to relax and forget about all of my problems. Who doesn't like to jam to one of their favorite cd's or maybe just relax and listen to one of their favorite artists? I know I do. In my opinion, music can get a person through anything and is the "universal language of mankind."
Music is so great because it has the power to break down boundaries, unite and bring those from different cultural backgrounds together, no matter the race, gender or language barriers. It has the capability to express those emotions which cannot be put into words and for many, including myself, it is a creative outlet.
Music is everywhere. On the radio, TV, in movies, on iPods; our world literally revolves around it. It has been said that music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything, and this is why I believe music is essential to our lives (definitely my life) and I couldn't imagine a world without it. Could you?
