Seniors, it's almost that time after college where you're faced with having to figure out what the hell you're going to do with your life. If you're like me, then moving back home is one of your main options. Here's a list of pros and cons of moving back home after college:
1. Rules and Chores (ughhhhhhh).
Let's be real. Nobody likes them; rules and chores absolutely SUCK! But, yet, of course, all parents expect you to do them "Make sure you wash your dishes", "Fold your clothes" and the infamous line that we've all heard, "CLEAN YOUR ROOM...IT'S A MESS!!" They were cool when you were a young naive kid and you would get an allowance for it or it meant you could go to the mall with your friends (Come on....we all did this) but it's so much harder adjusting to them after being away from them for so long. When away at school you didn't have anyone to tell us what to do! You were your own boss....IT. WAS. AMAZING! But if you learned anything about living with your parents for the first 18 years of your life...it's something that has to be done especially if you're "LIVING UNDER THAT DAMN ROOF" *insert screaming parent voice* lol.
2. You're not treated as an adult.
While away at school you got to call the shots and you were the one responsible for yourself. During that time, you definitely started to grow up, realizing that you're an adult and you've gained a bit of self confidence by knowing what is and isn't best for you. Well, your parents will most likely not see it as so. They will still see you as their young teenager that they dropped off at college and will treat you as so. Believe me, I have that problem some times....But you have to remember that it's only temporary and once your parents see how much you've grown and the responsibilities that you take upon yourself..they will back off and let you do you.
3. Fear of getting too comfortable and getting stuck there.
Everyone's biggest concern about moving back home after school is getting way too comfortable and getting stuck there. In all honesty, after school is done....the 'adulting' get's very real. You have to find a job/career, start paying off those loans and find a place of you can call your own. You're going to have a lot of anxiety about it all. AND THAT'S OKAY!!! There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Being at home seems easy: free food and free living. But you also didn't spend 4+ years in college to just stay at home to be a bump on the log. It definitely takes a lot of time, patience and hard work. More importantly, don't spend your time thinking about getting stuck and use it to focus on your ultimate goal.
4. No "booty calls"/one night stands.
Come on...it's your parents house. Gross. It was acceptable to do it in your dorm room but imagine waking up the next morning and having to explain who this one night stand is to your parents.....it'll be the most awkward experience ever....just do yourself a favor and avoid it entirely.
5. Seeing people/classmates from high school.
Now, this can be a 50/50: you could be those rare species who LOVE every single person in your high school class and still keep in contact with them or you're a normal human being who absolutely HATES seeing people from high school. It's probably the most awkward thing in the world. You're either avoiding them as much as you possibly can or you suffer through the uncomfortable 'catching up' conversations and the fake 'oh yeah we should definitely go out for drinks'. If you're one of the lucky ones and have an easy escape route SAVE YOURSELF AND GET OUT!!!!
6. Feeling like an outsider.
When you move back home after college (especially if you went out of state) you're going to feel like an outsider. Don't take it personal: you've been away from home for 4+ years. That's a lot of time and a whole lot has happened while you were away. It's not like time stopped just because you weren't there! BUT don't forget, you were an outsider when you got to college and you learned to adjust. If you did it once you can do it again!
7. You get to see your family every day!!!!!
If you're anything like me, then family means the world to you. And honestly, the fact that I'm currently attending college across the Pacific Ocean and the United States combined (I'm from Hawaii) being away from my family for 3 (going on 4) years is really hard. One of the best things about moving back home after being away from them for so long is being able to make up for lost time. And as strange as it seems, you develop a new found bond with your parents (at least I did) and it's honestly the greatest thing in the world.
8. SAVING MONEY!!!!!
Aside from the luxury of having your own room back, your own bed, YOUR OWN BATHROOM, and FREE FOOD you also get all those wonderful things RENT FREE and there is no phrase better than that. Moving back home allows you to save up your money and help you start paying off your loans (if you have any) and help you get on your feet and into the real world WITH the benefits of being with your family.
