Wes Anderson's film "Moonrise Kingdom" is a quirky, eccentric and “the feels” inducing piece that is a must see, especially for college kids. Don't worry, it's on Netflix. This movie impacted me so much, especially because I just turned 20 a few months ago. When you hit 20, you are no longer a teen, something you were defined as for the past seven years of your life. It can get pretty sad when you know you aren't an innocent little kid anymore. This film helps to relive those carefree days, especially when adulthood might have altered who you once were. It revolves around two tweens, Sam and Suzy, that just don't seem to fit in wherever they go, whether it is in a rich family or a scout troop. They truly represent what it means to walk to the beat of your own drum, but not in a bad way, most of the time. Through all the grand theatrics and eccentric dialogue that surrounds the work, if you watch closely you will truly get something remarkable out of this movie. After watching, I felt so incredibly, genuinely happy. The film taps into a part of you that brings out the good in you and those feelings you thought you may have forgotten from when you were their age. You can learn a lot from these seemingly clueless outcasts to the rest of society.
It will make you miss being a kid and tap into your childhood memories.
It will inspire you to go out and do something for yourself.
It will allow you to not be so concerned about what others think of you.
It will make you seize the day.
Watching these two kids, madly in love, going out after what they want makes you think of when you were a kid and looked at the world as an open book, full of endless possibilities that you can accomplish, something that many of us have forgotten with age. These two have so much drive to leave a situation that does not make them happy and set off to find something that does. It allows you to think, why can't I do that too? "Moonrise Kingdom" allows you to escape into this fantasy world, and even when you do leave it, you realize that you can take some of the imagination that these kids dreamed up and see how it's not so much of a fantasy. It's really so simple and practical and easy to bring pieces of it to your reality. Seeing these two just go out and do what they want to make themselves happy let me say I can do that too. If I leave any doubts at the door and take a step into the unknown, joy and possibilities are endless. It doesn't hurt to take a few hints from Sam and Suzy.
