Why Men Should Feel Things

My perspective on the social stigma regarding men and emotions, and how its detrimental to society.

Why Men Should Feel Things
Drantonio Howell

Everyone experience emotions, good or bad. In my opinion, emotions run everyone. They guide what you do with your life, they guide all your decisions. They are a beautiful part of existence. Even the bad ones such as pain or hate can help you by giving you insight into the way you act. But if these negative emotions are not in check and acknowledged, they can lead to dangerous actions, the worst being violence.

Men especially are prone to violent behavior, I believe the reason for this is the social stigma that surrounds men and emotions. Men are taught not to feel pain, it is seen as unmanly which can be detrimental to their health. Denying yourself the way you feel is like denying yourself food or water. You need food and water to live, personally, I think it’s the same with emotions, if you ignore the way you feel, you suffer. If you suffer, you look for ways to not feel that pain. Most of these coping mechanisms are negative, such as drinking, doing drugs, harming yourselves, or harming others. On a larger scale, ignoring the way you feel can indirectly lead to an increase in violence, or intolerance.

Personally, I don’t think its naturals for men to be more violent or intolerant, it’s just society’s standards that guide the way men interact with their emotions. Personally, let’s say since the dawn of humanity, the gender roles were switched, women were taught to be tough, strong, and resilient, while men were taught to be quiet, emotional and submissive. If this were the case, I’m not a sociologist, but I do believe that women would be the ones committing violent crimes, and men would be the less violent gender. The reason for this are feelings. They’ve been around as long as humanity has, and they will be there until the end of humanity. They are universal.

The point I’m trying to make is emotions are important. They are valued way less than they should be. There are so many unnecessary stigmas, that while we may be trying to undo, they are still prevalent in our society. As long as these stigmas and ideas are around, it will continue to harm humanity as a whole.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
