Society is incredibly harsh on young women. We must be a certain size, look a certain way and act accordingly. This can do incredible damage to anyone’s self-esteem. Especially, if we do not feel we live up to the standards of being “beautiful,” a term society uses very strictly when the truth is beauty comes in several sizes, shapes and vary in features. Many girls built up around the ideals of society however also find other ways to build self-esteem in a world where it is constantly picked at. Some workout, some find love with music and others become master artists and enhance their inner beauty with cosmetics. Cosmetics or makeup is more than just eyeliner or blush, it's brightening someone's sparkle after it has been dulled by harsh statements. It's expressing creativity in different ways, other than sketching or painting.
It’s Not About Looking Pretty
Makeup is not about looking pretty, cosmetics help make women feel comfortable. The use of makeup allows users to enhance their self-esteem, feel confident and be themselves in a world that tells you not to be who you are.
It’s About Regaining Control
Cosmetics help regain control over things you cannot. Scarring, acne, rosacea—whatever creates insecurities among users can be easily hidden from the world. Makeup allows me to hide my insecurities and walk with my head held high among anyone. All the things that I feel flaw me from living up to society’s standards, no longer hold me back from feeling “beautiful.” I can have a little control over my skin, which, at times seems like I have no control over. I can be who I want the world to see me as, rather than being someone who hides from being seen.
It's Not a Joke
Recently, the Internet has been fueled with hate toward many beauty gurus and cosmetic artists. Many who love using makeup have been teased about it. The term “cake face” is constantly thrown around or the question, “Why do you wear so much makeup?” And the truth is we usually don't wear so much, society’s idea of natural beauty, always involves some form of cosmetics although they state that looking a certain way is completely created via nature. Most people who don't wear cosmetics fall for that lie as well, thus advancing the false ideal further. Society also doesn't warn anyone about the fact that if your skin is not naturally smooth or radiant, sometimes cosmetics seem heavier or are applied heavier to compensate for the imperfections. Another point that needs to be made is that if someone loves makeup and uses it constantly, it shouldn't be a big deal. Society also over dramatizes the use of cosmetics. So, next time you watch your favorite beauty guru’s newest video and try to mimic the look, ignore the haters and put some more mascara or blush on if you want, because if it makes you feel better then do it.
