I can still remember walking down the crowded streets of South Main Street, Freshman Year, for my first ever Michigan Football game. I looked around me at the thousands of people who wore the same colors, the same smile, and the same enthusiasm across their faces that I did. However, I loved the fact that we were all so different.
Each person had a different upbringing, a different story to tell, and a different dream for the future. Yet, something united us all.
When I travel home for the various breaks, there is no doubt that I'll pass someone wearing maize and blue and decide to strike up a conversation. No hesitation, no questions asked; there is an immediate bond and sense of connection that is simply unmatched by any other.
Even on my vacations to Miami or Puerto Rico, I am sure to hear a “Go Blue!” as I window shop through the bustling strip on Lincoln Drive or hit the beach to grab a quick tan before I head back to the Tundra we call Michigan. I am sure I'll see an alumni or two as I sit by the pool sipping a drink, people watching, and listening to my music. Whether it be a hat with a block M or a simple Michigan tee, it is inevitable that wherever I go, I'll have someone who shares the same love for this school as I do.
Someone, who despite the frigid cold winters and long walks to class, sees the beauty of the law quad and the block M that is perfectly placed in the center of the Diag. Someone who, despite the hard work they have to put in, has dedicated their time here to being the best version of themselves. At the end of the day each person at this school will tell you that they are proud to wear our colors.
It's not because we love the random shade of yellow we call “maize” or because blue is “oh so unique.” It is because it connects us all to a place where our Thursday mornings are spent busting our butts in class or the UGLI and our Thursday nights are spent hoping our ID will get us into Skeeps. Our Saturday mornings are spent tailgating and partying anticipating the football game ahead, while our Saturday nights are spent recovering or rallying in attempt to go back out. On Sundays, its always back to business. The stacks will be packed, the Ref will be silent, and the second floor UGLI will be the biggest social scene on campus.
We know how to have a good time, but we never fail to forget what brought us here. We each have goals for our future, passions to fulfill, and standards to meet. We each understand that happiness lies in balance, not just in a letter grade. We all can agree that life is meant to be experienced rather than simply read about in our textbooks. Somehow at the end of the day we are all able to call this place hoMe.
