Why I Love "Harry Potter"
Wikia - Harry Potter

I have been a fan of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series since my mother started reading the books to me way back when I was little. I listened to Jim Dale tell me the stories, and I read each book through at least seven times. When I am sick, upset, just waking up from a nightmare, or simply in need of some comfort, I will pull out a book and start reading again. I call them my “security blanket”. It truly doesn’t matter that I know some passages by heart; the words put me right at home. At this point, my copies are incredibly worn; covers peeling and pages folding. The spine on the first one started coming apart long ago, but I don’t care.

I didn’t know you could fall in love with a story until I read these books. I love them the way I love a person for all they have brought me. If I have kids, I will share these stories with them as soon as they’re ready for them, because I want them to love Harry Potter as much as I do. J.K. Rowling is a captivating writer and inspiring woman, and I will always love opening one of her books. These books are an example of brilliant storytelling; adventure, suspense, love, and, of course, magic. They never fail to transport me. It is the characters, however, that bring me back again and again. I love them as I love my friends, and have learned so much from them.

Hermione taught me being a know-it-all can me downright useful, even if your friends make fun of you for it. I still cheer every time she punches Malfoy in the face. She is funny and loving and incredibly strong. I always wanted to dress up as Hermione when I was little, and even made all my friends call me "Hermy" for a while. I made my mom braid my hair so it would come out wavy and a little bushy, as described in the books. She was always, and in some ways still is, my hero.

Snape taught me how much there is to a person, if you take the time to look. Ron taught me humor and loyalty and love. Harry taught me strength. None of them were perfect and they all messed up, but that made them so much more real. I have laughed out loud and cried thick tears while reading these books. They hold so much to be felt, learned and loved.

Now, I also love the movies. I am always down for a good Harry Potter movie marathon, but they have never replaced the books for me. The books hold the detailed prose describing every curl of Snape’s upper lip and twinkling of Dumbledore’s half-moon spectacles. I’m also a total sucker for the feel of holding and reading an old book. I love my seven books, each sitting on my bookshelf in a row. They might be battered and fading, but they are just as inviting as they have always been.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
