Lazy summer evenings are arguably the best point in time of the entire year, and I feel that the best way to appreciate them is through a nice walk.
The Scenery: Everything seems prettier in the evening. I love exploring the neighborhoods in Old West Austin because the houses have so much character and charm. My aunt and I spend our walks picking out the ones that we would live in. I also love walking at the Nature Center in my hometown--bonus points if you can spot lightning bugs.
The Company: Walks are best taken with one other person. You can comment on the scenery, chat about your respective days, current events, life or just walk in silence. I took a lot of evening walks with my dad the past couple of summers, and it was a great way to spend time with him before I left for college.
The Quiet: The evening haze. There's a calm that settles over everything. I love peering into stores' windows. I love walking past houses when its getting dark and they have their lights on and you can sneak a peek into someone's private world. Creepy? Maybe. But definitely intriguing.
The Animals: This by far, is my favorite part of taking walks. I love making friends with cats (it's a talent of mine) and seeing everyone's dogs. This one couple had a King Charles Spaniel Puppy tonight and I just about died. Sometimes if I'm lucky I'll spot a wild rabbit.
Everyone drives everywhere, and while that's convenient, it doesn't give you a chance to slow down and notice the little things that make your neighborhood or town unique. Stop and check out the (sometimes literal) roses--go take a walk this evening and see what you can find.
