When I tell most people that country music is my favorite genre of music, I get strange looks and comments that range from “You don’t strike me as hick/redneck” or “All they sing about is beer, girls and dirt.” I will agree that while some country music is comprised primarily of lyrics about beer, girls and trucks, in no way is all country music about that. For me, I like country music because it tells stories that I can relate to in almost every aspect of life.
Take for example, one of Billy Currington’s latest songs “It Don’t Hurt Like it Used To.” This song is about getting over an ex, and how with each day, it gets easier to get over. Having to get over someone you really liked is tough, and this song was helpful to me in realizing that it does stop hurting.
Country music reminds of where I came from. Montgomery Gentry’s “Where I Come From” is a perfect example of small town life. I am proud of my small town, and who it has made me as a person.
Country music helps me remember those whom I’ve lost. Carrie Underwood’s powerful song “I Will See You Again” reminds us that our loved ones aren’t really gone; they are just waiting for us when it is our time. One particular lyric, “This is not where it ends. I will carry you with me,” says that just because they are gone, it doesn’t mean we will forget them. We carry their memories in our hearts and minds.
Country music reminds me to take chances and to not have regrets. Tim McGraw’s song “Live Like You Were Dying” says that we all have limited time on this earth and that we need to make the most of it while we are here. Give love rather than deny it. Do something crazy. Don’t have any regrets.
Country music gives me something to look forward to. When I hear "Fishin' in the Dark" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, all I can think about swing dancing to the song at the barn. So many of the country songs give a rhythm that is perfect for dancing or just a simple relaxing night under the stars. There is nothing better than sitting around a fire and listening to Garth Brooks, Old Dominion and many others.
There are so many reasons as to why I listen to country music. Other country music fans have their own reasons. It’s more than the beat and the rhythm. The personal connection I can create to each song is why I keep coming back for more. If people would take the time to really listen to country music, I bet they could find more than a few similarities between themselves and the songs, and they would see that it is more than just “hick” music.
