To my long-distance best friend,
I would ask how you are doing - but I know you're doing well. I may not see you every day, but that does not mean we don't talk every day. It does not mean I don't get reminded of you in the little things I see walking around my town. It definitely does not mean I am not thinking of you every minute of every day.
Unfortunately, some force has made it so that we are not meant to live in the same zip code, or time zone, or hemisphere. How we came together to a similar point and created this bond is unimportant. What is important is that it was made - and it is truly the glue that holds me together some days.
I happily watch your life from the sidelines - all your friends, experiences, and accomplishments truly make me happier than you know, and I'm sure you feel the same way about mine. We both have our own fun and exciting things going on that we obsessively fill each other in on over text and phone calls every night. But, I just wish I could be there to experience it with you.
It is hard having a long-distance best friend because every goodbye breaks your heart. You know you will see them again, sometime soon - but getting on a plane not always knowing the exact date and time of your next hug is difficult.
But, maybe the reason our bond is so strong is because of our distance. We are able to focus on what is important, rather than the pettiness of everyday life. We can experience crazy, awesome things together for the sake of spending time together. We can give each other unbiased advice about the everyday people who are also important to us. We can really get to know each other.
The distance is the worst thing and the best thing for us. It is the foundation our friendship is built on. Though I wish we could beat it every day, it just doesn't seem like it will be a reality. So, in the meantime, I'll keep being here for you from two time zones away - and I know you'll be there for me too.
Love you,
Your long-distance best friend
