Why Joining A Sorority Changed Me For The Better

And why it will change you, too.

Why Joining A Sorority Changed Me For The Better

About a year ago, I accepted a bid from the Zeta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma.

I was unsure of what this journey had in store, but at the same time, I was incredibly excited to begin it.

Since then, a lot has changed, including myself. Becoming a part of something bigger than me has changed my life in ways I never could have imagined, and for the better.

Greek life often gets a bad reputation, which I find confusing. Countless lives have been changed and defined by the experience, and I am proof of that. Still not convinced? Consider the fact that since 1825, all but three U.S. Presidents have been members of a fraternity. Furthermore, 85% of Fortune 500 executives were part of Greek life.

I'd be willing to bet that the success of these leaders had a lot to do with their experiences as a part of Greek life. Accepting that bid will change you forever, and for the better.

1. You learn how to manage your time and handle multiple responsibilities better.

Try balancing schoolwork, classes, work, and a social life along with chapter meetings, events, and activities on a daily basis. You'll learn sooner rather than later that if you don't manage your time well, you will fall behind. Learning how to prioritize and tackle multiple responsibilities accordingly is a skill you'll need for the rest of your life.

2. You learn how to lead.

The structure of a sorority makes it conducive to honing leadership skills. Each aspect of the organization is upheld by its members, all of whom have specific responsibilities. As a member, you learn to take the position you hold seriously, and in turn, you gain hands-on experience and skills. Furthermore, holding a position in a sorority is often a stepping stone to even more opportunities, whether it be within your organization or throughout campus.

3. You learn how to listen.

Perhaps even more important than learning how to lead is learning how to listen. For instance, you might not get along with every single member of your chapter all the time. However, you will learn how to listen and treat them with respect, despite whatever differences you might have. You'll learn how to work with them on projects, committees, or towards a common goal. This is an invaluable skill that will benefit you just about anywhere, especially in the workplace.

4. You learn the importance of putting other people's needs before your own.

Philanthropy and community service are a huge part of Greek life. Each sorority has a nationally-affiliated philanthropy that we focus on, in addition to multiple service projects within our campuses and communities. Volunteering and making a difference in the lives of others can make a huge difference in ours. Furthermore, it sets the foundation for making philanthropy a part of our lives long after graduation. After all, giving back is something that will forever be important, and just as rewarding, as it was during our years in Greek life.

5. You will be able to connect with just about anybody.

You'll learn that we all have more in common than we think. You'll be surrounded by people who are distinctly different from you, but at the same time, who all face obstacles, fears, and insecurities, like you. You'll learn to accept and embrace this diversity, and you'll be able to connect with more people as a result. Being able to engage in conversation with a wide range of people is more than just helpful; it's necessary. And what better way to hone these skills than putting them to use every day as a member of a sorority?

6. You gain confidence.

You will gain confidence you never even knew you had. Being a member of a sorority offers you a variety of opportunities to step out of your comfort zone. It starts with going through recruitment and never stops. You're challenged, you learn about yourself, and you grow every single day. You are part of an organization that values you as an individual, one filled with sisters who are constantly there to support and encourage you, no matter what. You learn that your opinions, your point of view, and your thoughts matter. You learn to accept yourself and what unique aspects you bring to the group.

7. You are inspired.

You will be surrounded by an amazing group of women, each of whom possess their own unique talents and passions, and all of whom share a drive for achieving the goals they set. You will see everything they accomplish, and you will be inspired by these women to reach higher, work harder, and dream bigger.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
