Greek life is often portrayed poorly through the media. Being in Greek life myself, I can honestly say I have never been so proud of an organization for the things they do for the community. These are just a few of the reasons why Greek life is the best thing to happen to me.
1. Giving Back
Sororities and fraternities are constantly raising money for their philanthropies and always attending each others' fundraising events. There is nothing better than being with your friends, meeting new people and also having fun while raising money for organizations you are very passionate about.
2. Friends
While some people might think having 150 sisters is crazy, I absolutely love it. Need advice on school? An older sister in your sorority is bound to have your major. Boy advice? Someone has definitely been in your shoes before. Need a dress to formal, but you're broke? You literally have 150 closets to go through and 150 Instagram profiles to stalk, screen shot and send in the GroupMe saying, "Let me borrow that dress."
3. Involvement
Joining Greek life already takes a lot of commitment, but it is astounding to see how many Greeks are involved with so much on campus. Whenever I want to get involved in a club, event or intramural sport, I can text someone in my sorority asking for more information because they are already involved. If I do not want to go alone, I can put a quick post on our Facebook page or text my friends in a fraternity and someone is always down to get involved.
4. Grades
One stereotype many people have is that girls in sororities are not intelligent. And one thing those people do not know is we are required to have a certain grade point average to be able to stay in Greek life. Almost all sororities and fraternities also require the members to do certain study hours each week to make sure they are maintaining their GPA. Personally, this makes me work harder for good grades, knowing I have 150 girls pushing me to do the best I can.
5. Opportunities
The amount of amazing opportunities Greek life has offered me is endless. My sisters are my family, and each and every one of them offers each other new opportunities for jobs while in college, traveling, volunteer opportunities and so much more. Another plus side to Greek life is the old saying, "Who do you know here?" is actually applicable to future job applications. Being involved in Greek life can actually benefit you while applying to jobs, especially if the employer was also in Greek life. Greeks are held to a certain standard and being Greek shows that we can be involved on campus, we can raise money and we are passionate, all while maintaining good grades.
If I had to do college all over again, I would not change one thing about my Greek life experience thus far. I am proud to say I am in Greek life and I am surrounded by such amazing people.
