After you were born, life was all well and good. You were the center of your parent and grandparents universe until the second child came. The attention given to you was cut down and suddenly you felt the need for more attention. As you got older you started to see things balancing out more, and then a few years later things started to swing clearly in their favor.
1. You were always supposed to set the example
You did something and then your sibling attempted to copy you and wound up in trouble, it is your fault, you're the older one, you should know better. If I had a nickel every time I heard that one.
2. You always had to take them places
When you were fourteen years old nothing was cooler than going to the mall on Friday nights. Unless like me, your mom made you bring your nine-year-old brother with you. It made me feel uncool and lame for toting around my younger sibling when all I wanted to do was be a mall rat.
3. You were always fighting a losing battle
Whether the argument was verbal or a punch was thrown here or there- the older sibling is always in the wrong. Again, we should know better. Yes, apparently you're just supposed to take it.
4. You were always faced with no
My first party, not until I was fifteen. I can recall my brother going to parties in sixth grade. Parents response, "You did it too." No, I did it four years later in life. No was such a key component in my life where my younger sibling rarely faces that word. After you it's easy for your parents to just say yes because of the angelic paths you have paved.
5. They always get what the want
They're the baby, at this point. you're a college kid just looking for a free meal when you're home. Meanwhile, your sibling is spending money like it's no object while taking some from you at the same time. They get things and do things at a much younger age then you had.
6. You never want to let your sibling(s) down
As annoying as it is to be the older sibling, you always want to be a role model for your younger sibling(s). As much as they annoy you, they look up to you whether you know it or not, and by you setting a good example lets them prosper as well.
