Our whole lives have consisted of people repeatedly telling us that “college is the best four years of your life” and it is. College is amazing. We meet the most amazing people, attend the best parties and our only true worry in the world is finding time to do everything at once. So yes, sometimes we want to stay in this universe of being 20 forever, but sometimes we look forward to what’s ahead. And that’s okay. That’s normal.
It’s okay to look forward to owning your first real apartment with your best friend in the city where you have to pay for your own electric bill, but you get to pick out every single piece of furniture that goes into it.
It’s okay to be excited about the prospect of a real job where you get to wear cute work clothes and take the train to work everyday. You’re finally making real money and not relying on your parents for the first time in your whole life.
It’s okay to look forward to your wedding day with your soulmate. It’s okay to sometimes wish you were five or ten years ahead of time, so you could be laying in bed next to your husband instead of wondering when your childish boyfriend will ever grow up.
It’s okay to look forward to holding your child in your arms for the first time and wondering how something could be so small, but so perfect.
It’s okay to look forward to when that child grows up and goes off to college and you’re telling her that those next four years will fly by and those days will be the best days of her life.
It’s all okay. But don’t let it consume you. Because everyone is right. These years are amazing, but so are the next four years and the four after that. It’s all what you make of it. You can’t be living in the future and you can’t be living in the past. Live in the moment and believe me, every four years will be the best four years.
