Feeling like you were born into the wrong generation really sucks. The music you love is never played on the radio, your favorite movies and TV shows are nowhere to be found and you’re always that girl at the party who “accidentally” puts on an Earth, Wind and Fire song when the DJ gives you a chance to control the music.
For me, I have an obsession with the '70s and the '80s. I so wish I could experience this time period for myself. Whenever I can, I’m listening to the rewind stations, hoping they’ll play the Bee Gees or Diana Ross. Some of my favorite movies include Saturday Night Fever and the Rocky movies (1-4 of course). I’m just so fascinated with this time period, and when I listen to the music or watch the movies I feel like I’m taken back, even if it’s just for a moment in time.
I’m not too sure where this obsession stems from. One of my friends brought up the fact that it could be because my parents listened to a lot of old school music when I was younger, but I think it’s more than that. I think it has to do with my craving for a simpler time. Don’t get me wrong, the '70s and the '80s did have their flaws, but there was a lot of good that came with them as well. For example, there were a lot less distractions. People weren’t concerned with social media or texting, the opportunity to live in the moment was much more available than it is today. People were more concerned with what was in front of them in the moment rather than what a great picture or status it would make in the next 20 minutes.
People were also just more involved with what was going on around them. A baseball game was a baseball game, a walk in the park was a walk in the park and a concert was a concert. They weren’t chances for a photo op or anything else.
The fashion during this time was also really interesting. The bell bottoms and the dresses from The '70s or the scrunchies and skirts from The '80s, a lot of people negatively judge it, but I’d totally be about it.
Not to mention the chance to go dancing on a Friday night (especially with '70s music) or go roller skating at the roller rink with your friends on a Saturday. It all seems like it would have been so much fun and it kind of sucks that I’ll never be able to experience it for myself. But again, I do have the movies and the music to take me there, even if it’s just for a little bit.
But with things like technology that can save lives, cars that are better for the environment, HD TV, Netflix and everything else that comes with living in today's time, it’s hard to say that I don’t appreciate it. I mean let’s get real, I probably would never get anywhere if it weren’t for my GPS and I don’t think I’d be able to make it through a whole semester without face timing my mom at least once, so maybe it is best that I just admire my favorite decades from afar.
