Most years, when summer dwindles down and fall peaks out behind the hot, burning sun and welcomes all back to school, I want to cry. I live for the summer. The hot days where you practically live at the beach, and nights perfect for bonfires and s'mores. But this year, I have found myself unusually excited for fall.
I'm not exactly sure why, but I can't wait for a light chill in the air to accompany the new smells of apples, pumpkins and Halloween candy instead of the beachy smell that stays with you all summer long. I love the colors of fall: the deep burgundys, the warm yellows and oranges, unlike the bright burning oranges present in summer sunsets, muted browns and slight reds. These colors are everywhere; to the leaves mixed across trees and dusted on the floor to the outfits that people wear.
The feeling of fall, way different than that of summer, but still beautiful in it's own way. Fall is like the last breath you take before the bitter coldness of winter, and is the refreshing chill after the long hot summer. It's grey territory, sort of like spring, in the black that is winter and the white that is summer. This year I welcome the chilly breeze, a cool down to the many way too hot summer days instead of rejecting it with sadness.
Fall is beautiful, the trees take on a color not seen in any other season. Bright and bold oranges, yellows and browns fill the sky line on the top of trees, making the sky to appear a duller, but more fall appropriate blue. It’s a time when it isn’t cold enough to see your breath fog in the air, but not warm enough that you aren’t provided with a cool down from the hot air of summer.
I long to smell the smell of apple pies and pumpkin pies baking in the oven, the golden brown of the pies that look oh so delicious, and make you believe you can eat the whole pie even though you can't. The sweet aroma of Starbuck's pumpkin spice latte. And the premature smells of Thanksgiving turkey baking in the oven.
Also fall means that bootie season is back, along with comfy and cute cardigans, and scarves too. Fall fashion is a life style, one that I happen to enjoy.
Fall brings about two holidays: Halloween, a time to be anything and anyone you want to be because you can, and Thanksgiving, where you can eat as much as you want and not be judged. Two holidays I love and cannot wait for. Along with hay rides, apple picking, pumpkin picking and any other fall related activity.
Fall is almost upon us, and I embrace it’s coming with an open heart, and more importantly, an open closet full of cute fall clothes that are begging me to be worn. Fall is coming, I say, to loosely quote the great predictor Ned Stark, and I cannot wait! For maybe the first time in my life.
