7 Reason To Have A Roommate In College
Bustle

So far, a lot of my friends in college either don’t get along with their roommates or don’t really talk to them. All schools say you don’t have to be best friends with your roommate, you just have to respect each other. But I think that’s just sad. Both of my parents are still really close with their college roommates/floormates.

Now, I know there’s no such thing as a “perfect” roommate, and there’s always going to be a time when having a single sounds great. But for the most part, living with a roommate is one of the best parts of college, and here’s why:

1. You have someone who will always get food with you

A shared love of food is definitely one of the foundations of mine and my roommate’s friendship. There is never a time when neither of us aren’t willing to get food. It’s two in the morning and you’re having a breakdown about the quiz you have to take in a few hours? Better get Insomnia. It’s 10 p.m. on a Wednesday and you just finished that paper? Let’s celebrate with pizza! You’re in the mood for wings simply because wings are amazing? The order’s already been placed. Seriously. The day one of us suggests getting food and the other refuses is the day the world ends.

2. You can have your own weird inside jokes.

Whether it’s quoting random Vines we find funny, finding weird ways to insult each other, or even just saying the same thing every day when one of us leaves for class, my roommate and I have tons of crazy inside jokes that I can’t even mention on here because a) no one would understand them to begin with, and b) they’re honestly too weird to share.

3. Someone will always be there to listen to you vent

You know something good is going to happen when the first thing your roommate says when she walks in is, “You are not gonna believe this . . .” Since neither of us have any classes together, we can vent about our teachers or classmates without worrying if they’ll ever hear about it. It’s great.

4. You'll always have a partner for song duets and dance parties

Honestly, most of the dancing comes from me while my roommate watches me and shakes her head. But the singing definitely comes from both of us, whether it’s a theme song to a show we like or just any random song that pops into our head. Rooming with someone who tolerates your constant need to belt out songs is definitely a plus.

5. You have someone to be lowkey mean with

This partially goes with the venting thing. If you’re ever angry, whether it be a teacher who gave you a bad grade or a friend you’re in a fight with, you can count on your roommate to slander that person along with you, even if they have no clue who they are. Being able to share those terrible thoughts you think to yourself but never say out loud is both hysterical and refreshing.

6. You have someone to share clothes with

Whether it’s swapping shirts or loaning a scarf, it’s always helpful to have someone who knows just what your outfit needs and is willing to let you wear it.

7. You have someone to just be your friend

Living with another person isn’t always easy, but at the end of the day it makes college so much better, from having someone to pig out on junk food with to just being that extra presence in the room after you’ve watched a scary movie. My roommate is loud and insane, but so am I, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
