In literature, a semicolon is used to continue a sentence that a writer may have chose otherwise to end. In recent years the semicolon has taken up a new meaning. Many people are joining Project Semicolon to support those who struggle with depression, suicide, addiction, anxiety, or self-injury. One of Project Semicolon's main quotes on their website is "A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you, and the sentence is your life.”
Project Semicolon came onto the scene in April 2013. It was started by a girl named Amy Bleuel who took the awkward punctuation mark and turned into a glorious symbol of hope.Amy started the project in honor of her father who took his own life. Since it's inception, Project Semicolon has inspired millions of people to get a small but meaningful tattoo a semicolon on their wrists, hands, and other limbs.
People have often modified the tattoo to have a heart around it or have gotten the word "Warr;or" tattooed on them with the i being replaced by a semicolon. In any variation, the tattoo still has the same just meaning; A meaning that if you have the tattoo, you support people who struggle with depression, suicide, addiction, anxiety, or self-injury.
All in all, Project Semicolon has helped many people who have gone through hard times. It is a constant reminder that if you do struggle with depression, self harm, or any of the other things involved with this project that there are people who care about and will support you through hard times. You are never alone.
I got my semicolon tattoo in honor of a friend long past, and often times encourage people to get a semicolon tattoo. It's a small symbol that you will have forever that will always have a deep and just meaning. Every time i see someone with a semicolon tattoo i just think to myself that this person has a story associated with that tattoo or they are just supporting a noble cause; in either case I always want to talk to them.
