Why I Hate Stereotypes

Who Made These Things Anyways?

Why I Hate Stereotypes

Stereotypes. We all have been stereotyped and labeled before. Just like we all have stereotyped and labeled someone else based on their appearance. But, why do we do this? Why do we automatically judge people by their appearances? Why do we place people in these categories based on their gender, race, hair color, etc? I wish I knew the answer. Regardless of our reasoning, we need to defy stereotypes and stop putting labels on people. Here’s 4 reasons why I hate stereotypes:

1. Because Women Are Intelligent, Hard Workers, and May Not Want Kids

I know many women who have the capability to be CEO’s and maybe even the president of the United States someday. However, the stereotypes about women say otherwise. People assume women are just emotional beings whose goals are to get married and have children. But what if I don’t want any of that? What if I want to be a construction worker or a CEO? What if I don’t want a family or to ever be married because I value my independence too much?

2. Because Drug Addicts Aren’t Bad People, Rather Misunderstood People

I know many people, both men and women who have struggled with drug addictions, which may I add are some of the BEST people I know. I really hate the phrase “drug addict” all together because of the negative condentation that goes along with it. These people are just like you and me. They have families, everyday struggles, and certainly aren’t perfect. These people are fathers, mothers, children, students, teachers, etc. They are no different than anyone else and definitely shouldn’t be treated that way or be assumed that their bad people.

3. Because People Who Have Tattoos And Piercings Aren’t Dangerous

People that are covered with tattoos and piercings are some of the kindest and down to earth people. Everyone always assumes that people who have them are dangerous, criminals, or bad workers. However, most of the people I know have tattoos and I certainly don’t consider these people as dangerous or a ‘threat.’ I also don’t consider them as bad workers because of something they wanted to put on their skin. What exactly does having tattoos or piercings even have to do with a job, anyways? People shouldn’t not get a job because they have tattoos. Just like a person shouldn’t get a job if their hair color is red. What’s the difference really?

4. Because African Americans Aren’t All Criminals

This is probably the most annoying stereotypes to me. Just because someone’s skin color is darker, doesn’t mean that they are bad people or ‘criminals.’ However, stats of prisons may say otherwise, but this is due to our society. We live in a society where everything is WAY easier for any other race, except for African Americans, of course. It’s like society wants African Americans to fail. Again, this is why it is so important that we all defy our stereotypes and show society that all these labels are far from the truth! I know African Americans who are so intelligent, kind and have never committed one crime in their life.

Stereotypes. This is something we all need to work on. We all need to stop judging each other. Nobody is perfect and nobody is their stereotype.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
