According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, destined to search through time to find their other half.
In light of Rupert Grint's comments on his beloved character Ron's future life, I'd like to set the record straight. Hermione and Ron ended up together in the books, and they were a good couple. There was truly nothing terrible about their relationship and I have no qualms about them getting married and having a family. Despite all of this, I don't believe that Hermione and Ron are soulmates.
So what is a soulmate exactly then?
"Well, it's like a best friend, but more. It's the one person in the world that knows you better than anyone else. It's someone who makes you a better person. Actually, they don't make you a better person, you do that yourself because they inspire you. It's the one person who knew you and accepted you and believed in you before anyone else did or when no one else would. A soul mate is someone who you carry with you forever. And no matter what happens, you'll always love them. Nothing can ever change that." - Dawson Creek.
Harry and Hermione were the true soulmates of Harry Potter. And I mean that in the most platonic of ways. Neither of them, to our knowledge, harbored romantic feelings for one another, and yet they seemed to complete each other in ways that their romantic partners could not. From the moment they became friends, they were constantly at each others' sides and forced each other to look deeper within themselves to improve. For example, Harry never mocked Hermione for her love of knowledge and her need to fit into the wizarding world, and Hermione soon looked beyond Harry's status as a chosen one. Neither of them would have survived without the other.
The two wizards shared an unexplainable bond. There was no reason for them to be as close as they were. While there was always the Golden Trio of Harry, Hermione and Ron, Ron never seemed to be quite as attached or he became jealous quickly and resented the others for their successes. One thing the movies touched upon really well, was the small moments that Hermione and Harry would share that no one else seemed to notice. From the first book, in which Hermione admires his bravery to the last book, in which Harry takes Hermione to his hometown when Ron has abandoned, Hermione and Harry have been there for each other. There are so many moments that JK Rowling put in that showcase how close Harry and Hermione were. One could compare them to siblings almost, but even then that doesn't seem to do justice to their bond.
As a child, we always dream of meeting our soulmate or our other half. And for most of it, we imagine our soulmate as the love of our life. I'd like to challenge that idea now though. We all know of people who just seem to complete each other and are so different but so much the same at the same time. The abilities of these people combined are almost something awe-inspiring and its no wonder Zeus felt the need to separate them. Soulmates are a force to be reckoned with, and no one can deny that Hermione and Harry are extremely powerful when they work together.
For all of you waiting, I encourage you to look at some of the people around you. Look for your person and you'll find that your soulmate isn't necessarily your knight in shining armor, or your princess, but the person who has stood besides you as you head into your most challenging moments. The person that has been a stable force when the world seems to crash around you. The person that inspires you to be better. Find that person, and all of a sudden the world becomes a little smaller and you become a little bit more capable than you ever thought possible.
