Like most other teenagers, I was the master of procrastination. And applying to college was no exception. I would wait until the night of, or sometimes even the day of, to complete most assignments and would be just fine so I never felt the urge to get ahead. Luckily this all changed in college.
However, I applied to three schools and got accepted to each one. I had applied to a small university, a very large university and then a community college in case things took a turn for the worst.
With that being said I then had a decision to make. I went to college visits to check out the universities to see what they had to offer and make sure if was a good fit. But, of course, I liked them all...
I ended up choosing the University of Indianapolis at the last minute, shocking I know. And I am forever grateful that I did. UIndy only has about 5,400 students and as you can imagine it is a small university where everyone knows everyone. And if you don't, you will soon.
I went into college declaring nursing as a major. I wasn't sure this was what I wanted to do but I didn't really explore other options until my second year. With many visits to my advisor, Sunni, I decided communication and public relations would be perfect for me. Another decision I am forever grateful for. I can't thank Sunni enough for guiding me to my passion. I honestly don't think I would have found it without her.
With only having about 5,400 students that means class sizes are typically very small. My smallest class so far was a communication class and we only had 7 people in it! I personally love this aspect of my university because you really do get one on one attention with your professor and they know you on a personal level, not just a name on a roster.
When I tell people that I attend UIndy they often time seem impressed. UIndy is a very well known university that I feel has prepared me extremely well for my future. Along with classes they offer applied classes for my major. For me, my applied class is my public relations class.
We get split into groups of four or five students. Each group then gets assigned to a local nonprofit organization needing assistance in their public relations efforts. You then work all semester on different tactics (such as press releases, websites, logos, etc.) for them to create an entire campaign. All of this real life work while your'e still in college is amazing when applying for internships or jobs. I have gotten all three of my internships based on my portfolio of work from this class and my blog.
As you can see UIndy really excels in academics and preparing their students for life after graduation. These past four years really have flown by. I sure am going to miss my university and all it has to offer.
