Why Go Greek At Wofford?

What's so great about joining a sorority? Is it the lifelong friendships? The amazing philanthropies? Or the amazing Greek community?

Wofford College’s Greek Life is absolutely amazing. It changes you for the better and is something that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Going through sorority recruitment has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my college career. Each sorority at Wofford is so unique, but we work together as a Greek community in a way that you would never expect from such a small school, and that’s what makes it so worthwhile.

There are four Panhellenic sororities at Wofford: Kappa Alpha Theta, Delta Delta Delta, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Kappa Delta. Every sorority is made up of a different group of girls that are extremely close friends. Even outside of our sororities, we’re all friends as members of the Greek community and Wofford Terriers. I have supported or attended every single sorority philanthropy event during my time so far at Wofford. Panhellenic love is all around campus. Rarely will you see a large group of girls walking around campus who are all in the same sorority!

Kappa Alpha Theta (ΚΑΘ) (or “Theta”) was founded in 1870 by Bettie Locke as the first Greek-letter organization among women. Their national philanthropy is Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, and The Friendship Fund. You can find these intelligent girls (they have the highest overall GPA of all four sororities) sporting their colors of black and gold all over campus and involved in many other things. They’re back-to-back Greek Week LipSync Champions and sport their symbol, the kite and twin stars, proudly.

The Zeta Eta chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta was founded in 1989. You can see what all these girls are up to on their website!

Delta Delta Delta (ΔΔΔ) (or “Tri-Delta”) was founded in 1888 and has grown to be the largest sorority nationally. Their national philanthropy is Children’s Cancer Charities, and they are known for their partnership with St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. These girls rock their silver, gold, and cerulean colors while involving themselves in almost every activity on campus. They’re proud of their three letters and currently the Panhellenic New Member of the Year and Panhellenic Woman of the Year at Wofford are members of Delta Delta Delta.

The Gamma Psi chapter of Delta Delta Delta was founded in 2000. You can check out what all these talented girls are up to on their website!

Zeta Tau Alpha (ΖΤΑ) (or “Zeta”) was founded in 1898 and is currently the second largest sorority nationally. Their national philanthropy is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness, making one of their honorary colors pink. These girls are all over Wofford’s campus, flying by in turquoise and grey, their shirts sporting their symbol of the five-point crown. As current Greek Week Champions, you can find them anywhere and everywhere at Wofford, from cheering at athletic events to working hard in the science labs.

The Theta Zeta chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha was founded in 1978. You can check out more of what these girls are up to on their website!

Kappa Delta (ΚΔ) (or “KD”) was founded in 1897 and is known for their olive green and white colors. Their national philanthropies are the Girls Scouts of America and Prevent Child Abuse America. These girls are involved in everything (Wofford’s Editor-in-Chief of the Odyssey is a Kappa Delta, after all!), and are always supporting each other. When they’re not inspiring confidence in the Girl Scouts and their fellow Panhellenic sisters, they’re hard at work on their next great event.

The Epsilon Sigma chapter of Kappa Delta was founded in 1979. You can keep up with these great girls on their website!

Each sorority also hosts at least two events every year to raise money for their philanthropies. Every event is unique and something you don’t want to miss. In the fall, you can find the Thetas at their Chipotle catered “Queso for CASA”; the Tri-Deltas hard at work on “DHOP” or Delta House of Pancakes; the KDs planning out their fantastic “Shamrock ‘n’ Shuck” Oyster Bake; and the Zetas sporting pink and selling treats during their entire “Think Pink” week. During basketball season, Tri-Delta has “Smooch the Pooch” where you donate money in order for our Boston Terrier mascot to kiss the teacher of your choice. When spring rolls around, we have even more philanthropy events: Zeta hosts their annual “Shag-a-Thon” (which, for those of you who don’t attend Wofford, means the dance); KD has an annual 5K called “Shamrock ‘n’ Run”; Tri-Delta plans an awesome dodge - ball tournament; and the Thetas have “Boots & BBQ.” At every event, you’re bound to see tons of girls from every sorority on campus, and with all these worthwhile philanthropies to support, who wouldn’t want to go to all of them?

Not only have we each done amazing things as sororities, but we have made an amazing impact during Greek Week. By coming together as a complete Greek community (sororities and fraternities), we raised over $6,000 for Special Olympics. And to top it all off…we did it using only coins (by competing against each other in “Penny Wars”). We hosted a Special Olympics Luau, bringing in kids from surrounding areas; we danced and had a pizza party as one Greek community.

Our friends on campus are all around us, whether they are in Greek life or not. The greatest thing about Wofford is how close the entire campus community is. My best friends are involved in so many things, Greek or not: track team, equestrian club, rifle team, yearbook, and more. Whether or not you decide to go Greek this fall, you’re going to have absolutely an amazing time at Wofford, and I can’t wait to meet each and every one of y’all!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
