This one goes out to all the warriors.
Well, the ones of keyboard or social justice variety, at least; y'all are the best. You fight "The Good Fight" most of us don;t have the time or effort to do, and that's combating the idiocy of internet trolls. See, I'm used to only dealing with this ogreish human type when I'm scrolling through the comments section of a Youtube channel. Someone posts an opinion, a second subscriber politely asks them to eff themselves, and, how do you say, flame war erupts from this encounter.
Next choice you'll have to make is whether or not you will View All (# of) Replies. Spoiler: Don't. IT's just an infinite stream of meaningless, hurtful slander between two or more people, no one giving an inch regardless of how unimportant their argument is. For example, would you waste over an hour trying to explain how Spider-Man's suit is is red and blue, not blue and red? I know I wouldn't.
This brings us to why I've penned yet another Odyssey article, and if you're reading this, it might be for you, or someone you're now nodding along and thinking of. This person may spend endless amounts of time replying back to a snarky comment on their Facebook status made by a random Facebook "friend" they haven't even communicated with since high school ended. If you've found yourself attempting to win an Impromptu Speech & Debate battle in the comments section of your own status, here's a little pointer: It's not worth it.
This is especially true if you've found yourself being the aggressor, wandering onto someone else's newsfeed and riling other users. The way I see it, Facebook is like the ancient Greek plaza, a town square for which all come to hear the good word and speak worldly truths.....so when someone jumps on social media just to post asinine garbage I'm more than a little disappointing. This becomes especially true when we turn to social media for a political following.
Personally, I've got strong (perhaps even surprising) opinions on the matters of politics, religion, and a host of other touchy topics best left unquestioned in a public setting. Why? Because it's a guaranteed fact SOMEBODY is going to disagree with you and voice their opinion as you did yours. The result?
You retaliate, as expected, with statistical fact to back up your opinion and why this clown is completely, totally, utterly wrong. Thus begins a back-and-forth tirade of two people, and again, others who are watching the events unfold with popcorn in hand, battling out in a war neither will win. Will you change your opinion? Probably not, and pride dictates that halfway through a public debate for all Facebook friends to see is the time to back down and admit defeat after some +20 comments in. Likewise, your opponent may be thinking the same thing.
To my warriors, socially just and keyboard alike, don't get me wrong in thinking I'm insulting or embarrassed of you. Social media is for social interaction, and there's a plethora of social interactions out there, both awkward and attractive, that entice a certain audience; I'm just not one for Facebook fights.
If it's your thing, though, more power to you(and stop by Susquehanna Speech & Debate to hone your skills!), and I wish you the best. As for me, I'll leave my judgment for my weekly articles.
