I'm not someone who can say that they're especially active. If I'm being completely honest, I'm pretty lazy. Working out has been something I stay away from and, living in Florida, it makes just about any outside activity seem gross. I'm not someone who enjoys sweating or aching. Lucky for me, I was shoved into the world of yoga. My roomie's a very adamant instructor, a good one at that, and after watching her for months on end I decided it was my time to try.
We bought my yoga mat at Forever 21, just a simple ten dollar one. My purchase was our first beginnings into the yoga world. Since then I've gotten myself more into buying athletic clothes (they're actually super comfortable to wear even if you don't work out) and asking her to teach me. My roomie is very patient and understanding so our sessions have always been fun and full of laughs.
Yoga, so I've learned, is one of the most relaxing things you can do. You don't necessarily have to work yourself to death and sweat. You can just sit and stretch for a while. Either way, yoga is a really great way to get rid of stress. I've found it to be a good outlet if I'm having a bad day and even if I'm not I still come out of it feeling so refreshed and happy. Yoga gets me to be active without having to over stress myself.
I think that everyone should try it at least once. I've come to find that more people are willing to join you than you think. Even out in public, nobody will stare at you or judge you for doing yoga. I don't feel like I look funny or that my thighs are jiggling, nothing like that. It's one of the most peaceful things I've come to do in a long time. We've had a group of our friends come together to do it and it was so much fun. Everyone looks so beautiful and happy doing yoga together. It's a great bonding experience.
It's even better to try and self-teach yourself some yoga or follow an instructor on Youtube or Instagram. That way you won't have to blow a lot of money going to classes, though some are really educational and fun. There're so many different forms of it, too! Whatever is going to make you most comfortable is what you'll enjoy. Either way you can bring a friend and buy a cute athletic outfit to go out in. Afterward you can even do what I do and shove a plate of mashed potatoes in your mouth.
Yoga isn't about getting fit or 'gains,' though it's good to be healthy. It's about peace and understanding, loving yourself and loving other people. It's about being happy. Yoga is a great way to work out and be yourself without having to stress. I believe everyone should try it, at least once.
