Spring Break. For some it's a time to head south and go wild, for others it's a time to relax and rewind with family. This break I decided to do something different and spend my break volunteering with a group of students at my university.
Over the course of this week, strangers turned to friends, I learned tons of new games, and most importantly gave back to the community through service. If you need any more convincing, here's 3 more reasons why you should definitely go on a community service trip
1. Travel
On my trip I got to go to Memphis, Tennessee. I was beyond pumped to visit the "Volunteer" state (how fitting). Other locations my university took trips to are Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Not only do you get to travel, but you usually get to travel for cheaper than what you would pay for a regular spring break, at least in gas and alcohol money. It's fun to go out and see our great country and everything it has to offer.
2. Make new friends
At college we often become friends with people who are in the organization or activities we are most involved with. It's always good to branch out and make new friends cause they could easily become some of your best friends. When I started out on my trip I knew only one other person. It was kind of scary but also exciting. I shared a room with 10 other strangers who quickly became fast friends. We had a blast and made so many memories over the course of a week and I can't wait to make more.
3. Service
A lot of people look at service as a chore. Something to do because they have to do it and not cause they want to do it. I can sometimes agree with that statement, but the after effect of service is so worth it. Not only that but its a great feeling to do it alongside really great people who also really want to help. It's amazing to see how grateful and fulfilling the organizations you volunteer with for your help. It's all so worth it in the end and such a rewarding feeling.
Long story short, this week changed my life and I am extremely thankful for this experience. Already looking forward to SB2K17!
