Why Every Major Should Be Respected

People feel passionately about their majors, does that give them the right to bash others?

Why Every Major Should Be Respected

A huge part of college life is your major. A huge part of your actual life is your major. In some ways the major you choose in college defines you. Sometimes in a positive light, "Oh I'm gonna make a million bucks when I get my degree!" Sometimes in a negative light, "Wow you're not good at anything if you're in that major." The amount of times I've heard statements like those above, in just the past month, are astronomical and ridiculous.

Being an Anthropology major, I've heard my fair share of "Wow social science, that's easy" or "Are you actually going to get a job?" It's really fun to get jabbed at all the time for something that I enjoy doing and that I hope to do for the rest of my life. I have friends who are in computer science that have been told that they are dirty and don't shower just because people think that your major dictates your hygiene. Can we all just stop please? There is too much major bashing. Don't believe me? I asked a few groups of people about their majors and what has been said about them and here are their responses.

Physics- antisocial and have no friends.

Engineering- they are in an engineering cult, they are shut ins who never see the light of day and all of them are compensating for something...

Computer Science- shut ins, no friends, and never shower.

Psychology- a dumb persons neuroscience, the people within this major don't have a plan for life they are just "winging it."

Molecular Biology- premed wannabes.

Political Science- not a real "science" and it is just a joke.

Business- they do absolutely nothing.

Architecture- all it is is arts and crafts

English- means unemployment.

Neuroscience- you won't get a job anytime soon, good luck paying for med school.

Anthropology- not real, will never go anywhere in life.

Biochemistry- not well rounded people.

Japanese- just a bunch of anime nerds.

Biology- you're med school or you're nothing, get ready to get weeded out by the first couple classes.

Education- doing something that won't make money, wasting their time and potential.

Chemistry- you're just going to end up making drugs.

Actuary Math- just predicting when people are going to die.

History- no one cares about it.

So, as you can see, sometimes we are not the nicest about what other people study. We should be, and we should learn to respect every field and value it because it has its own uniqueness in itself. No matter what your major is you're doing something important, and obviously if people are willing to teach it and a university is willing to put money into IT IS WORTH SOMETHING. No one should feel lesser than another person just because we are interested in something different. We are all trying to get a better education and further ourselves in a field. Just because someone is learning something different than you are doesn't give you the right to put them down or look at them a different way.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
