Why I Don't Keep Up With The Kardashians

The Kardashian-Jenner clan is NOT known for their intelligence. The Kardashian-Jenner clan is NOT known for their worldly accomplishments and achievements. And the Kardashian-Jenner clan is surely not known for being classy, modest and respectful women.

Rather, we gawk at their luxurious (and frequent) vacations. We applaud their inarticulateness. We stalk their on-again, off-again relationships. And for some reason, we can’t pull back our weird fixation. Even during the Syrian refuge crisis and the attacks on Paris, one of the top hashtags “trending” on twitter was involving the Kardashians. How is it that this family, who possesses no outstanding talents, could be anywhere near as important as global crisis’s that have taken valuable lives?

Our society has built the empire they have become, and that is because we cannot seem to STOP paying attention to them.

And of course, I can acknowledge the fact that it would be totally ridiculously splendid if I could buy my own house by the age of 19. Better yet, who wouldn’t want to have companies sending them free stuff just to post a picture with the product on Instagram? Or, getting 1 million + likes on each Instagram post. That rocks.

But do you know what rocks even more? Getting accepted into your dream college. Landing the job you’ve been working towards since you were a little kid. Scraping by, penny by penny, to finally be able to afford your own apartment and appreciating the feeling of what is finally YOURS.

All I’m asking is, imagine yourself a few years down the road with children. Would you be hopeful that these future (or possibly current) children would aspire to be a Kardashian when he or she grew up? I’d sure hope not.

Keep up with the news, keep up in school, keep up with the upcoming presidential election. Stop keeping up with the Kardashians.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
