Recently, I overheard a student talking about how much they dislike Arcadia – which is not an uncommon thing to hear – but when they mentioned they were interested in getting a “Day On Campus” student just to warn them NOT to come here, it really bothered me. Please, tell me what is so bad about this school?
Every school has flaws, no matter what school you go to.
I transferred to Arcadia University last year. Prior to that, I attended two other Universities and they were shit compared to Arcadia. I’ve never seen a school that has faculty and staff who actually care about students like this one. Granted, I am within the Communications department and it’s small and the professors are all wonderful humans who go out of their way for us all the time- but that's one of the benefits of going to a small school.
I understand that people have concerns about their education as well as numerous other concerns that relate to the University. Instead of complaining about it with your friends, take your concerns and present them to people who can (and do!) make changes on campus.
If you ever have a suggestion to make something better, or there’s a policy you disagree with, or whatever ails you – there are PLENTY of resources for you to get your voice heard on campus. Student Government actually does stuff. If you go to an SGO meeting and raise a complaint the service committees will get on it, and most likely report back at the very next meeting with an update on why something is the way it is, or they'll tell you they’re actively working with faculty to change something.
Please stop complaining that there’s nothing to do. There’s almost always something to do. Student engagement faculty works REALLY hard to make YOUR college experience as nice as possible. I understand that some of the events on campus you may not find fun, but I mean, it’s free entertainment. Also if you have ideas about things you want to see on campus, there are clubs you can join that actually do care about your opinions and will gladly take your suggestions.
But there are literally at least two events happening every single weekend of the semester - which most schools definitely do not offer, usually they have one or two events a month.
Why is orientation so painful? You don’t HAVE to participate in it – I mean, its best that you do but nobody is forcing you to have fun. The orientation leaders are probably some of the nicest, most caring people you will encounter in your college career. They spend a lot of time planning orientation for you guys so you can make new friends and learn about the community. Also, orientation is essential for the freshman year experience.
I understand that people are allowed to say what they want to say and feel how they want to feel about Arcadia, but there are channels for you to get your voice heard so you can actively contribute and make changes in the campus community. Arcadia actually gives students an opportunity to get involved like this and a lot of other schools don't do that.
I guess, what I'm saying is instead of focusing on all of the negative things about the school, make an effort to change them so you (as well as future alumni) will have a better time here.
