Why I Do Dance Marathon

And why you should, too.

Why I Do Dance Marathon
Megan Dunn

Have you ever felt like you were a part of something bigger than yourself? Have you always wanted to make a change in your community, or had an interest in changing someone's life?

Welcome to Dance Marathon, an awesome, fun-filled day that benefits the kids at Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Each year Dance Marathon raises thousands of dollars for the kids as students everywhere dance the night (or day) away. Friday, Oct. 9 was National Dance Marathon Day, and after having participated in last year's event, I only felt that it was appropriate to share my experience and how it became one of my favorite college memories.

Participating in Dance Marathon is unlike anything I have done before. Having decided to participate with my sorority Phi Mu, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. Would I be able to dance all day? Wouldn't it be exhausting? What if I didn't feel like dancing anymore?

Of course, all of my expectations were wrong.

Dance Marathon was one of the best charity events I've ever experienced. You not only have fun with your friends and participate in fun events all day (not just dancing, by the way), but also get to hang out with some of the coolest kids you've ever met. The kids who come to Dance Marathon are so full of life and so excited to be there that it really makes you think about what you're participating in. It's not just a way to keep you busy for a weekend -- it's changing a child's life. It's giving an entire family hope for their child. It's making memories while taking part in an amazing cause.

You don't have to be good at dancing, either (trust me). As long as you have a great attitude and a passion for helping others, this is an event you should seriously consider participating in. It has definitely changed my perspective on what it means to help others and has even encouraged me to participate in more philanthropy events. Participating in Dance Marathon has taught me that when a huge group of people comes together for an incredible cause, nothing is impossible. It's taught me that helping others is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have, and that nothing beats making someone else's day.

If you're looking for a new way to make a difference in the community and in peoples' lives, consider participating in Dance Marathon this year. Not only will you make some great memories with great people, you'll also feel incredible knowing you made a difference in someone's life.

So what are you waiting for? Make a change, and check out Dance Marathon this year. It'll be one of the best decisions you make, believe me.

For the kids.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
