When most people hear that a story involves a princess they assume right away it’s just going to be about some beautiful girl who’s in distress and needs to be saved by a prince. They say don’t look up to princesses because they aren’t strong role models and just teach little girls that they need some prince to come along and save them.

I beg to differ about that though. I believe that princesses are the best role models out there; especially the Disney princesses. There is more to them than just being another pretty face as Disney’s new Dream Big Princess campaign goes to show. They teach young girls great characteristics and values to have.

Cinderella: “Have courage and be kind.”

Cinderella teaches girls to be determined and never give up on their dreams. She shows them to get what they want they have to go out and work for it themselves. She also teaches them to be kind to everyone no matter what.

Rapunzel: “Go live your dream.”

Rapunzel teaches young girls to always dream big. She shows them to have courage and be adventurous. To not be afraid to live out their dreams.

Ariel: “There is a world where hope and dreams can last all the time.”

Ariel teaches girls to have a sense of exploration. She shows them what it is like to travel into a new world. In this new world she finds hope to make her dreams come true. She also shows young girls what it is like to make a sacrifice for your dreams.

Mulan: “The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.”

Mulan teaches young girls that you can overcome typical stereotypes. It is okay to prove people wrong when they tell you that you can’t do something. She also shows them how to become a strong leader.

Tiana: “The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work.”

Tiana teaches girls to be ambitious. To dream big and work hard for it. She shows young girls how hard work will pay off in the end once they reach their dream.

Belle: “People think I’m odd, so I know how it feels to be different.”

Belle teaches young girls it is okay to be different. That is what makes them special. She also shows them how to think on their own and be independent. The most important lesson they learn from Belle is never judge a book by its cover.

Merida: “Our fate lies within us you only have to be brave enough to see it.”

Merida teaches young girls to be brave no matter what is happening. They are in control of their own fate and destiny. She also shows them how to solve problems on their own.

Pocahontas: “Listen with your heart, you will understand.”

Pocahontas teaches girls to listen to their hearts to follow their dreams. She shows them how to respect and take care of the earth. They will also learn from her that sometimes we need to put ourselves in other people’s shoes to understand them.

Snow White: “Remember you’re the one who can fill the world with sunshine.”

Snow White teaches young girls how to be a good friend to everyone they meet. To be happy, open minded, and kind to those around them.

Sleeping Beauty: “They say if you dream a thing more than once, it’s sure to come true.”

Sleeping Beauty teaches girls to dream. To always keep dreaming because eventually they will come true. She also shows them what it is like to be curious and have a sense of wonder.

Jasmine: "Whatever we may do, you are here for me and I'll be here for you."

Jasmine teaches girls about being loyal. She also shows them how to be generous and compassionate towards others.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
