We cry for many reasons. We cry happy, sad, and angry tears.
And though I personally hate how puffy and red my face/eyes get after crying, having that experience is so cathartic. I feel liberated after I cry.
The last time I cried was this past week.
I had so many negative thoughts in my head that I could not stand myself. I was thinking about my self-worth: what others thought of me, my grades, and so forth.
So, I cried.
I cried all the negativity away.
I find crying to be so pure and beautiful.
Now, I'm not saying that we should romanticize pain (or indications of pain), but there is something heartbreakingly beautiful about crying.
Crying shows that you are in tune with your emotions. And most importantly, yourself. It shows that you are vulnerably willing to show yourself (or others) your emotions. That you are willing to show your pain (or sometimes happiness).
Crying happy tears is also beautiful. It goes back to being able to share your emotions/feelings with others. Being able to share happiness is such a great, indescribable feeling. It brings a sense of safety for me -- crying both sad and happy tears.
Sometimes, I'll cry because a song/an artwork has moved me.
Sometimes, I'll cry because I watched a cute movie (like Frozen, Monsters Inc., etc.).
Sometimes, I'll cry because my mother reminded me that she loves me.
Sometimes, I'll cry because I realize how many people actually love and support me.
Angry tears are probably the tears that still make me uncomfortable. I don't like being angry at anyone because it allows me to isolate myself from others (which is the complete opposite of what I want).
But they can be a great stress reliever. There are so many benefits from crying whatever kinds of tears you may be crying. They protect and cleanse your eyes. Tears help you become a stronger person (those who cry are strong, not weak). Tears help you connect with others. Sometimes, having a good cry allows you to be creative, too.
So, don't let anyone tell you that crying is pointless. That crying is a weak quality. Because it isn't.
After reading this, you should take a minute to reflect. Take a good cry when you need it. Cry if something moves you in a way you can explain. Cry when someone tells you that they love you. Don't be afraid to cry. Crying is what makes us human. Crying is natural.
