In all honesty, an article with the above title is probably enough to get me into some trouble with an editor or someone higher up within the Odyssey, but regardless, there's only 10 minutes left to my deadline and seemingly no answer as to what Buzzfeed-esque article I should write this week to buy myself another week so I can attempt to write something of worth for the following week. However, it's the Buzzfeed-esque articles that get more shares on social media, whereas the articles on politics and topics more dear and real to my heart don't. The emails keep reminding me, offering tips on how to get my article to reach a wider audience.
I have no issue with deadlines, but increasingly the questions that arise in my mind—as a writer—are what the bar is am I setting for my writing in terms of quality, and more philosophically: who am I writing for? A writer, in my view, writes for himself, not for the audience. With these articles I feel like the reward system is geared towards being more audience friendly, or at the very least easily digestible, in order to get more shares. In the meantime I am struggling to come up with a new idea every single week and thus my creativity is strained and I cannot produce a product I'm proud of.
I love the Odyssey, but an article a week isn't healthy for me as a writer.
