Deciding on a college major can be one of the biggest decisions of your life. It dictates what classes you’ll take in college, the experiences you will encounter, and most likely who you will encounter those experiences with. You see, choosing a major is like choosing your certain group of friends on campus too. These people are the ones that you’re going to have a majority of your classes with, so naturally, you’ll be stuck in group projects with them too. Then you’ll slowly find yourself hanging out with them on the weekends and going to dinner at the café together.
So when choosing a major, you should choose something you know you’re going to want to spend the rest of your life doing, something you’re passionate about. That’s why I chose human services. Now obviously these are not the only kids I associate with on campus, but they make up the majority. And when I think about that, it’s such a great thing to have friends as passionate about helping other people as you are.
Human service majors are not in it for the money, because considering some of the things the people in this profession have to deal with, we are definitely underpaid. But being a human services major comes from the heart of someone whose often had personal experiences that have led them to where they are today. I could imagine myself doing 20 other majors that would pay me three times as much as what I will be making, but would I truly be happy doing those twenty other things? No.
Seeing the difference that we make in peoples’ lives every day is a feeling that not many other people can feel on a daily basis. We are the professionals that people seek out in their darkest hours, and trust us to lead them in a better direction. Clients come to us in their most vulnerable of times for help that nobody else can provide them with. They rely on us to be there when they fall down and need a helping hand back up. We give people hope in their lives and goals to work towards.
Without a doubt, human service majors are the most caring individuals I know. They’re the best friends anyone could ask for because they simply care, and genuinely want to help others succeed. These people do not expect things in return, they do not only do something because it will benefit them. These people love the feeling they get knowing that at the end of the day, they changed someone’s life. They made a difference in someone’s day, no matter how big or small.
Now obviously that isn’t to say that there aren’t other people like this who do not study this major, but it takes someone special to commit their entire life to helping other people. And for that reason, I would choose over and over again to be a human services major. I have met some of my best friends through being a human services major, and I can tell you for certain, that we are all going to change the world.
