As college freshman decide what they want to do in life they are often influenced by a series of factors. What are my friends majoring in? What will get me the most money? Will I be able to live in a big house and support a family? Sure, most things going into consideration are legitimate concerns for any person. The unfortunate thing is that many people look past certain professions because you may not be able to achieve fame or fortune that way. What many are not taking into account are all of the reasons to genuinely take into account some of the majors at your school that might be overlooked. For example, Social Work. Here are six reasons to consider pursuing a degree in social work.

Job mobility

There is almost no end to the possibilities once you graduate from school with a degree in social work. One day you might decide you want to do something a little different. You know what? That’s OK. In the Social Work profession there will be room for growth during your career and time for you to figure out what you want to do with your time as a professional.

No day is the same as the one before it

You’ll never have to worry about finding yourself glued to a desk or walking to the same cubicle each morning. You’ll meet people and experience things that you would not otherwise have the ability to if you were in any other profession.

The world will always need social workers

As a social worker you may never have to worry about being out of a job. The demand for people who care about others and want to be of aid to them is likely to be high for as long as we all are alive.

You have the chance to make a difference in someone else’s life

No matter what it is. Whether you are working at an adoption agency, a nursing facility for elderly men and women, you have the opportunity to make a change for a person just by being apart of their life and doing your job. When you have a degree in social work you have the power to change someone’s future for the better.

You will continue to learn things beyond graduation

As a social worker you will meet people from different backgrounds. You’ll meet individuals who have lived through life experiences that you’ll likely never be exposed to. There will be countless chances to meet and get to know people that have more to tell you about things you don’t know than you would ever be able to find out from a book or a newspaper. You might even find out things about yourself that you hadn’t known before.

It is one of the greatest ways to advocate for human rights and social justice

If you can’t beat them, join them, right? Of course there are injustices that seem to be obstacles set up for certain people to live lives harder than others. These injustices make it difficult to believe that our government is taking into account the best interest of the people who live in our United States. Though it may seem unfair, as a Social Worker you are placed in a position of power. You will be able to make sure to the extent of your personal abilities that your clients are taken care of. You may not be able to change the world, but you will be able to change someone else’s world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
