Last night was the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The debate caused so much buzz that it was everywhere on TV and social media because everyone wanted to see what they were going to talk about. I will say that both of the candidates have their flaws, and neither one of them have proven that they could be a great president of the United States. For that reason and many more, I chose not to watch the debate last night, and here’s why.
First of all, I know that most people will say that they want to be informed voters, so they chose to watch the debates. But let’s be honest, the debates are basically the two candidates bashing each other until they have determined who has done less wrong. In my opinion that is not a productive conversation between two people who could potentially lead this country. If someone wanted to be an informed voter, they could go to each candidate’s website and it carefully lays out each one’s views and plans for when they become president. I would much rather do that and learn something then kill brain cells watching the two fight on TV.
When you turn on the TV to watch the debates you aren’t really learning anything new about the candidates. They have already stated their views and plans over and over again in speeches, so why do we need to bring them together to watch them argue yet again about who is right? It is not worth it. Hillary has been in the political eye for years now and her views have not changed too much from what we are seeing now. Donald Trump has also been a known public figure for years, and most people have already heard everything on his mind anyway. Watching these two argue with each other is not my form of entertainment, and I can think of a million other things I would rather do than watch these two for almost two hours.
Lastly, how can you be sure that they are telling the truth when they say things? That’s right, you can’t. So why would you want to watch almost two hours of information you have no idea is true? They say don’t trust anything that is posted on social media, well you shouldn’t trust anything that a politician running for president says. They are constantly trying to prove why the other person is not right and they will say anything to get people to believe it.
To prove my point, USA Today posted a long article today of all of the fibs and falsehoods that were said by both candidates last night (link at end of article). You can still be an informed voter, but do your own research to find out what is right and wrong, always question things. There are also no third party candidates that got an invite, which I think is wrong. If we can vote for them on election day, they should be a part of the debate. I chose not to watch the debates, not because I am not informed, but because I chose to do my own research and not believe the first thing that I hear out of a candidates’ mouth.
