Chokers have been one of the top trends in the fashion community as of late. They have been around for a long time, since 1890 to be exact, but only started to become a fashion statement in the 90's. Now, they're making a comeback. If you went shopping a lot last year, you were probably seeing a lot of trends that were big in the 90's like slim dresses with straps, doc marten boots, leather jackets, and chokers. Even though women started the trend in the 90's, males have also been wearing them as a statement and fashion piece.
The store ASOS was one store that started selling chokers for both genders, but Fashion designer, Louis Vuitton featured choker necklaces for men on his runway show last spring. It sounds like Louis Vuitton found a way for men to wear chokers as a statement for gender equality and also has a styling accessory. I mean think about it.
(Thierry Orban/Getty Images)I'm definitely all for men chokers. I'm all for women chokers. I mean, I believe chokers should be an accessory for all genders out there to wear. They sell from small and slim black ones to huge statement ones. I love how chokers now aren't just black with lace, which was the 90's choker. You can find any style and any color now thanks to ASOS.
Now, some people don't agree that men should wear chokers. "I know, opinions are opinions". One of this weeks main topic and argument on twitter was about men wearing chokers. Yes, at first chokers were made for women and were known just as a small chain necklace with a small pendant in the middle, gave it the sign that the woman who was wearing it was wealthy in her time. What some people might not know is that male celebrities started to come out in the spotlight wearing neck bands around their necks; also known as a CHOKER. Actor, Bobby Sherman, known for the hit tv show "Getting Together" started the neck band trend for men. The way he would advertise the accessory was incredible. Imagine ordering a $2 choker right in the mail that was black with gold trim. Thats a deal!
I will be honest. When chokers started to make a comeback again, I didn't really care that much. At first I wasn't very fond of them because I could spot a cheap one a mile away, but I think the reason I caved in was that I personally love velvet and I was seeing a ton of slim and colorful ones being sold all around. I love to see that men are now wearing them now and are finding different ways to express their style through the choker. Shark tooth necklaces, bandanas, chains, and collars can now all be used as chokers. I mean, Matt Lauer came out saying he's always been a fan of chokers and showed one off on his neck on live TV.
I understand why there are mixed feelings but I don't think that should change your choice of wearing one or not. If male models and celebrities are wearing them for everyone to see, then why shouldn't you? Push some boundaries out and go buy a "neck band"!
