What is Kim Kardashian famous for? Like really. Is it because some people find her attractive? Is it because she released a sex tape? Or is it because she's married to a self-proclaimed God? Regardless of the reason, I think we can all agree that she at least understands what it means to be an adult-
"I'm so mature now. I'm a grown-up version of myself." - an actual quote from Kim Kardashian West
I have nothing against Kim and Kanye specifically. If Kim wants to release naked pictures of herself and erase years of progress of not treating woman as sexual objects, then she has every right to. If Kanye wants to say, "My ego is my drug. My drug is, ‘I’m better than all you other motherf------. Kiss my a--!’ ”, then all power to him. What I don't like is that people love them for those reasons. People buy Kim's clothes just because she's Kim. People buy Kanye's music just because he is Kanye. People are even saying they want to vote for Kanye West in the 2020 presidential election just because he's Kanye West.
On September 4th, Taylor Swift posted this picture to Instagram-
Her hashtag #KanTay2020 implies that she would want to run as Kanye West's running mate in the 2020 election. And while this whole thing might just be a huge publicity and marketing stunt, there are plenty of people out there who would vote for them without even knowing where they stand on political issues, perhaps because they hate politicians, or simply because they're popular.
This situation is actually just like the 2016 political race already. Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush, and Donald Trump are easily the most talked about candidates in the race. Hell, even Deez Nuts is more talked about than all the Democrats not named Hillary Clinton, and the vast majority of the Republicans.
The majority of people don't even know where Donald Trump stands on issues. We know his stances on just about everything involving Mexico, but that's about it. Where does he stand on abortion, guns, marijuana, or college debt? We don't know because he hasn't talked about those issues, and he doesn't need to. Donald Trump knows he is a celebrity and knows that people are going to vote for him simply because he's The Donald.
But why? It's because we look up to and worship celebrities. Donald Trump supporters would love to be in his shoes for a day. Kanye West's followers would love to swap places for even a day. Celebrities offer us an escape from our regular lives. We look up to Donald Trump, Kim, and Kanye because they can do the things we can't. They don't have to take out a loan to buy a family car. They don't have to work their tails off at a 9-5 job for years just to be able to afford to go to Disney Land or a couple of days. In a way, they relieve our stress. When we stress out about money, we think what it'd be like to be a super rich celebrity who will never have to stress about paying any bills ever. We feed off celebrities' successes to make ourselves happier.
Studies have shown that when your sports team wins, you feel better about your life, and you're just happier in general. It's why teams like the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots have an incredible amount of "fans". Since they will always win a lot of games, fans flock to them because it makes them feel better about themselves. It's why we have bandwagon fans. Those are the people that hate to feel upset when their team loses, so they almost never support a team that doesn't have at least a decent shot to win whatever championship is in their sport.
Simply watching sports increases hormone levels. And when a person's favorite team wins, their testosterone levels skyrocket. This effect is seen in men and women alike. The same effect happens your favorite political candidate wins. We rush to celebrities because they're always winning something: elections, games, or simply life in general. And when our favorite celebrity wins, we literally have a biological reaction that gives us a false sense that we won too.
Here's a good video that explains this phenomenon.
This is a big reason why Donald Trump is so popular in this Presidential election. He's a winner, hands down. It doesn't matter about where he stands on issues or what problems he's had in the past, because he's insanely successful. And when his supporters hear that he's on top of yet another presidential poll, their body literally has a biological reaction that makes them feel better.
This is also the reason why the lesser known candidates will stay lesser known. When the average person looks at the list of candidates running in 2016, they really only know a few of them, so they can only have a biological reaction to a select group. This is probably a big reason why Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, John Kasich, and other Republican candidates aren't as popular as Bush, Clinton, or Trump. It's because people can't associate a winning feeling with any of them.
And I'm a part of this problem as well. I love football. I watch it whenever it's on TV. I love when the 49ers win. And when they don't win, and depending on the time of the year, I can watch the Golden State Warriors or the San Francisco Giants win. I imagine all the time what it'd be like to be a star athlete from one of those teams and make millions and millions of dollars a year.
My celebrity crush is also Taylor Swift, and it's probably not going to change any time soon.
So what's the point of this article? All I've really done is rant about celebrities and admit that I am part of the problem. To be honest, I don't really know the point. I don't have a magical solution to fix this problem, and I don't even really have an idea of where we should start.
I'm not trying to say that celebrities are bad people. They've earned their success, and are entitled to keep living out their lives as they please. And all of us, their followers, aren't bad people either. It really isn't out fault that we love celebrities because they're winners.
I'd like to say that we should stop spending hundreds of dollars on a ticket to go watch somebody who is more talented than us sing a song or play a sport, when people like teachers, firefighters, and paramedics, who are actually working to improve society, are making minimum wage or possible even working for free. But I really can't say that either, because I love going to sports games.
I guess if we can take anything out of this, I hope we can all find a way to obsess less over celebrities and more on ourselves. I don't mean that we should become completely full of ourselves, but I think we should all be more proud of the successes we have in life. If you don't have a lot of money, find something else in your life to be happy about- perhaps your family or your friends. If you just don't feel successful in life in general, give yourself a goal and work your hardest to complete it. Work hard to lose weight at the gym. Work hard to complete a tough hike. Work hard to make new friends. Work hard to find the love of your life.
We really don't need celebrities to make our lives better. We shouldn't have to resort to our favorite politicians, musicians, or sports teams to bring us up. We should be able to do it ourselves. We should all work hard so that we look to our past successes as guidance for our future endeavors, instead of looking to Kanye's popular album release.
We don't need to abandon our fascination of celebrities and sports. It's fun to get a bunch of friends together to watch a football game. It's fun to listen to the latest popular music or to go see a concert. But when we have some spare time, we shouldn't try to read about the latest celebrity marriage or pregnancy. We should instead work on ourselves and be proud of the hard work of ourselves and our loved ones. Because in the end, the only thing that should matter to us is how we live our lives, not how some person who we've never met lives theirs.
