In 1993, the most amazing TV show premiered and graced our homes for those next seven years until its series finale in 2000. I recently bought the entire series from Amazon and I have made my dad watch it since he has never seen it (shocker, I know. I was just as disappointed as you are). What made this series so great? Well, no matter what your age was, you were able to grow up with the characters. From the sixth grade up until their college years, we watched Cory, Topanga and their friends go through the ups and downs of life.
This family television show was not the typical show with the cheesy/"kiddish" lines. This was a show for people of all ages that everyone could love. They talked about friendship, family issues, love and many other life lessons. One of my favorite things about the show was the love story between Cory and Topanga, aka the greatest love story of all time, and nobody can tell me otherwise. Though Cory loved Topanga since he was six, they did not start dating until season three of the show. They went through their hardships like any other couple, and their relationship was put to the test between Topanga moving and Cory chasing after her because he felt their love was real. From this is where one of the greatest quotes from Mr. Feeny was born: “When you find love, you hold onto it and cherish it, because there is nothing finer, and it may never come again.” Oh yeah, can we also talk about how amazing Mr. Feeny was? He always gave valuable advice and delivered sass like it was nobody's business.
Another valuable character was Eric, Cory's brother whom all the girls loved. He was handsome, funny and just a little eccentric. Though they fought, Cory and Eric really loved each other and had such a good brotherly bond. As time went on, Eric took on a new identity in which he called himself Plays With Squirrels. Although weird, he was very insightful and delivered a line that stays with me until this very day, "Lose one friend, lose all friends, lose yourself."
There were so many characters in this show that taught us something, but personally, I think it was Shawn who really had the most impact on many viewers. He was a troublemaker and always goofed off in school, and it was found that the parental figures in his life were not the greatest. He dealt with his father leaving him and the death of his father shortly after. His mother abandoned him and left him homeless. Despite the many things that happened to him, he was able to persevere and become a writer.
If you have not watched the show, I would really suggest doing so. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry, but most of all it will make you appreciate what is around you and teach you about many things in life. So in the words of Feeny, "Believe in yourselves, dream, try, do good."
