The 2016 Presidential Election is perhaps the most important election in generations. With pressing issues ranging from terrorism to immigration control to climate change, the race is filled with heated debates on all sides. Despite the fact that the Republican Party started with 16 possible nominees, there remain only four: Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, John Kasich, and of course, who could forget the Great Donald Trump. I wouldn't vote for any of them. On the other side of the floor lies the Democratic Party and of their original four nominees only two remain, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. I will explain why Bernie Sanders is clearly the only choice for the presidency when compared to his two biggest competitors, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Donald Trump:
Despite his overwhelming support from the Republican Party, his lead in the polls, and the race through Super Tuesday, we cannot elect Donald Trump. Trump’s trademark issue is foreign policy and border control. Donald wants to have Mexico pay for a way to keep all of their “criminals and rapists” out of the United States. Moreover, Trump openly discriminates against Muslims and Mexicans and he is beyond rude to peaceful protestors opposing his ideals. How can we elect a president who is so mean, hurtful, and discriminatory to others? The USA has always been a melting pot of ethnicities. People from Europe, Africa, Asia, and virtually everywhere else came to our country to seek a better life. What does it say about us if we were to elect a person who is so against the minorities, and ethnicities, that have always been a part of our country, and are what make America unique? People praise Trump for telling it like it is, but at what cost? Other nations think that this is an utter joke, and do not understand how this man is even in the race, let alone winning. How can we elect a man who won’t be taken seriously by other nations? Trump's other policies include not banning the use of assault weapons and denying climate change. He's had unsuccessful business ventures like Trump University and Trump Steaks.
Hillary Clinton:
In addition to being an unsuccessful first lady, Hillary Clinton changes her mind more times than the man Katy Perry was singing about in her song “Hot N’ Cold.” She has stood on either side of almost every important issue such as LGBT Rights and has lied on multiple occasions. Clinton has an indecisive mind because she just wants to sound appealing to whatever group of people she is speaking to and she is also influenced by the large sums of money she is given by large corporations and banks. Hillary has constantly exaggerated and lied, claiming that she landed in Bosnia “under sniper fire,” though a video surfaced that clearly showed her walking calmly to greet people. She kept a secret server at her house, potentially compromising e-mails that concerned the safety of the nation. You may be thinking that Hillary sounds like a good choice for president on the issues. However, Hillary has taken almost every one of her positions from Bernie Sanders, constantly repeating Bernie's stances on free college tuition, getting money out of politics and climate change. Electing an indecisive liar who hides things from her own country that could potentially threaten safety and who only repeats the ideas that would get her votes would be a dire mistake.
Bernie Sanders:
Bernie Sanders, synonymous with millennial idealism, is the only candidate we should be electing in to the Oval Office. Bernie has been supporting the same things since his twenties, and has never changed his mind. Only his contemporaries did. Bernie is open about what he thinks needs to be done: changing the justice system, getting big money out of politics, and dealing with climate change. Bernie has never once expressed hate or prejudice and has been fighting for the equal social rights for men and women. He has constantly expressed that climate change is the most threatening thing to human safety and has constantly wanted to get down to the issues rather than bog down the race with arguments and hate advertisements. Bernie Sanders is an honest, trustworthy advocate for middle-class economic and social progress and will stop at nothing to get things done. He wants the change that the American public needs and is craving. Bernie Sanders deserves our vote because he does not lie, or express hate, disdain, or prejudice towards anyone, and is the only candidate that should be taken seriously in this election. So, go out and vote!
