This semester I had the privilege of rushing for a fraternity at my college. At first, I had no idea which one I wanted to look at. I'm the type of guy that has never really fit in with other guys; I've always been close with girls. That all changed this year when I became a pledge of Sigma Pi Fraternity. I understand that everyone has his or her own opinion when it comes to Greek life, but I want to tell you why I chose to be a member of my great organization.
When I initially became a pledge, I was very worried that the guys would not like me and I wouldn't fit in with them. I couldn't have been more wrong. I have grown to love this organization simply because of the people in it. Yes, I do have my differences with some of my brothers, but the thing that makes that a positive is that we use those differences to educate each other and learn how to be better men. I look at all of the other organizations on campus, and I think to myself, "I'm so glad I'm where I'm at right now." That isn't because the other organizations are bad, but because my brothers have provided me with a group of guys that help me grow as a man every day. I actually think that I have become more of myself through this organization. The number one person who has helped me realize my potential as a Sigma Pi is my big brother. He is continually showing me ways to become a better man, citizen and Sigma Pi. As a Sigma Pi, I am held to higher standards than my peers. I am taught by my brothers how to be an exemplary citizen who cares about brotherhood, truth, justice, scholarship, chivalry, diffusing culture and developing character. These seven values are stated in our creed, and I truly believe that we live by them. I have made mistakes while being a pledge of Sigma Pi, and my brothers have called me out on those. Not only do they call me out on what they know that I can improve, but they help me improve myself. Walking around my campus after class, it's hard not to run into one of my brothers and have them ask me how I'm doing. Sometimes we don't even talk about the stressful college classes we are taking, but we just hang out with each other on campus and allow ourselves some time to get our minds off of things.
I believe in Sigma Pi not because of the parties that we throw or the fact that Greek life looks good on a resume. I believe in Sigma Pi because I know that my brothers believe in me and will always have my back. Brotherhood is the best experience anyone could ever have in life. It is so much better than anything that parties or wealth could give you.
I say all of this not to tell you that Sigma Pi Fraternity is the best, but to say that Sigma Pi makes me my best. Get involved on your campus and find your group of people that makes you the best you. They are out there even if you don't think so!
"I believe in Sigma Pi, a Fellowship of kindred minds, united in Brotherhood to advance Truth and Justice, to promote Scholarship, to encourage Chivalry, to diffuse Culture, and to develop Character, in the Service of God and Man; and I will strive to make real the Fraternity's ideals in my own daily life."
