Everyone says how we are the lucky ones! We've already lived through three decades, two centuries, and two millenniums and most of us aren't even 21 yet. We are supposed to be "The Future", but somehow we failed to progress women. I'm not some crazy feminist, you'll never see me protesting, but I am a concerned female in the modern day. Here are the reasons why:
1. We are sexualized for everything!
Need to sell cheeseburgers? Boobs. How about advertising shampoo and body wash? Naked women. They have figured out that sex sells and they are desensitizing people. Why is it okay to show off women on social media like this? I'm pretty sure none of those models would think about eating McDonald's or Burger King. Stop it!
2. But breasts can only be sexual!
How is that Victoria's Secret can show off their lingerie with not a blink of an eye, but a woman feeding her hungry newborn is "disgusting"? I'm appalled at that fact that we think it is better for a mother to feed her child in a germ-filled bathroom rather than modestly feed them in public. I saw a video of people ridiculing a mother for breastfeeding in public, but the girl who was exposing more of her breasts right next to her was considered "hot" so it's no big deal. Do you eat in the bathroom or under a blanket? I didn't think so. If it's discrete, why is it such a big deal?
3. It's our fault that men sexualize us.
Somehow, it always becomes our fault because we dress provocatively. I get that sometimes we do dress with more skin showing than normal or tight clothes, but why does it become our fault that men can't keep their comments to themselves? Schools have now banned even more clothing because showing our shoulders isn't scandalous enough. Now kids aren't allowed to wear yoga pants because it distracts men. Girls can't be comfortable because we can't teach our men to control themselves.
4.We have to expect nasty comments.
When walking the streets, we are faced with the inevitability that we will be harassed by comments. Isn't it sad that wolf-whistling and comments about our beauty have turned into disgusting comments about what they want to do with our body? We were told to just ignore it, but how can we continue to let young men acknowledge us like this? And we just have to turn the other cheek. How can we progress as women when we still allow this treatment? Isn't it time to take a stand and say something to these guys?
5. Media pits us against each other
Our whole lives they point out what is beautiful and what is ideal. They show one image more than the others to create a divide. It is a tale as old as time that has yet to cease. I have seen so many body-positive campaigns, but they all show either thicker or skinny women. It's a battle we need to start uniting about. Who cares about size, color, or ethnicity. When are we going to realize that it is time to focus on what really makes a person? That is: brains and heart.
We are at a crucial time. We can either keep progressing, or hide in the shadows. In the past hundred years, we earned the right to vote, have broken free of the homemaker stage and started working our way into the government. I can't wait to see what is to come. Let's start making this a world for our children to be proud of. It's time to love ourselves again and do what makes us happy. After all, if we don't love ourselves, who will?
