Why Being A Founding Member Of A Sorority Changed My Perspective On Greek Life

It's not about image. It's about truly believing in what your organization stands for.

Why Being A Founding Member Of A Sorority Changed My Perspective On Greek Life
Mary Kate Hickey

I never thought I would be in a sorority. I don’t fit the “sorority girl” stereotype. Most importantly, I didn’t want to be defined by a reputation. This all changed this past February when I became a founding member of the Theta Lambda chapter of Kappa Delta. What changed my opinion?

Being a new chapter, there was no reputation or image on campus. All of my sisters went into this experience knowing we would be the foundation of this chapter. We would have to set the example and show the entire campus what we believe in and who we are as an organization.

Since I have been initiated, there have been many times I question what made me want to be in a sorority. Every time I think about it, the first thing that comes to mind is “no reputation.” Why is that so important to me?

Being a founding member has made me realize the true purpose of sororities. It’s to build women up and make a difference in the community. This is just not what Kappa Delta stands for. It’s what all sororities stand for.

As we see in the news, Greek life tends to have a negative image, and I used to be one of the people who thought Greek life was about social status and partying. Being a founding member opened my eyes to the fact that status and image are the farthest things from their purpose.

Since Kappa Delta was new to campus, I had no clue what other people thought of them. The most rewarding aspect of my journey was joining entirely because I believe in everything Kappa Delta is founded on and stands for. I think this is something most girls forget when they go through the recruitment process. We get caught up in image, status and reputation.

What it really comes down to is this: When you sign your bid, you should believe in everything your sorority stands for. Sororities were founded by women who shared the same passions and beliefs. That sisterly bond that we all want comes from sharing those ideals. Join a sorority because you believe in and are passionate about what they are founded on and what they are working toward. It will make your experience that much more rewarding.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
