It's OK That You're An Undecided Major

Why it's okay to not know what you want to major in right away.

It's OK That You're An Undecided Major

There comes a time in every person's life where it seems like the only that matters is where you decide to go to college and what you decide to major in. Both of these huge decisions bring heavy amounts of stress and doubt of whether or not you made the right choice. If you're lucky, you find a school where you feel like you fit in. If that's the case then you only have one huge decision to make: what your major is.

It's an absolutely ridiculous idea that at just 17 or 18 years old you're supposed to pick what you want to do with the rest of your life. Unless you're extremely lucky, you'll never guess the right major for yourself on the first try. Odds are, you've actually never been exposed to the major that you start out with and once you see it up close and personal, you'll realize you absolutely despise the major.

Even though it's a totally normal thing to change your mind about what you want to do, there's so much pressure to figure out what you want to do. You have to pick something. Declaring an Undecided major is the worst thing you could do to yourself. Except it's not.

There is so much stigma around being an Undecided major. If you are able to admit to yourself that you don't know what you want as a career, you're deemed lazy, unmotivated, or you're wasting your time and money.

Being an Undecided major is actually one of the best things that you can do for yourself if you aren't 100% sure of what you want to do. For the most part, your first two years are filled with getting the general education requirements that your school has out of the way. Even people who declare a major still have to take general education classes before they get into their major-specific classes. This means that they are basically in the same boat as you but they don't get the judgement for it since they have a declared major that they aren't even doing anything for yet.

The worst part is that people give in to the pressure: they choose a major. Not because they know they want it, but because it's better than going in with nothing. So they take those classes. They get into that major and realize that it's totally wrong for them. That means that they wasted time and money on a major that they don't even want. Once they change their majors, they have to realize how much farther away graduation will be.

No matter what the outcome, people will always figure out what they want to do. If you don't know what you want to do, it's okay. Most people don't right away. You'll figure it out like everyone else does.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
