Ever since I was a little kid, I have been waiting for the moment where I could call myself an adult. It was as though that one word would change everything about me and turn me into this awesome human being who has their life together. I was wrong; it did nothing except bring more stress.
Here are five reasons why it sucks to be an adult!
1. Having $41 in your bank account is the norm:
I have two different jobs as well as my full-time load at Emerson, but I still manage to be broke all the time! Sometimes I don't even know what I am spending my money on, and that can be really frustrating for me. (Hint: It's food.) Whether it be a latte at Starbucks or a textbook for the class you hate, you are always spending money as an adult and never on fun things. The other day I paid for my train fare in quarters, and that's when you know you're an adult for real.
2. Bills:
When you are living on your own, most of the time you have your own bills. Sometimes you can still be a part of your parents' cell phone plan or what not, but it is usually up to you. The $4.99/month charge for Spotify is technically considered a bill and it sucks to have that money withdrawn from your account, along with rent, cell phone, Netflix/Cable and whatever else you may be paying. This doesn't account for the student loan bills most of us will be paying in a few years...YAY!
3. Laundry:
I am in the minority, as someone who has laundry in my unit that isn't actually coin-op, but for most people laundry is expensive and a major hassle. Either way laundry sucks. I feel for those people who have to go to a laundromat to do their laundry because that is especially the worst. There is a special spot in hell for folding laundry after it is done.
4. Having to schedule your own appointments:
I am still guilty of trying to make my mother schedule my doctor's appointments for me. I hate having to find time in the day to call the doctor that isn't at 9 p.m., when I finally get home and the doctor's office is closed. Talking to the doctor takes up a lot of time and being on the phone is annoying. You have to give them so much information and it's just easier to beg your parents to do it, which you can't do anymore because you are an adult.
5. Having to eat real meals:
As an adult, it is not longer acceptable to eat PBJs for every single meal. Cooking becomes a thing when you are an adult that suddenly becomes unenjoyable. There is so much involved in making a healthy meal that is acceptable to eat as an adult. You can no longer come home at 6:30 p.m. and find an amazing meal on the table ready to be eaten, because you are an adult.
